Axle Stands
About to purchase some axle stands, looking for 2 x 3t.

I was hoping to buy traditional 3-leg stands with locking pin, but most (here in France) seem to be 4-leg ratchet systems. Anyone used both and have a view on the new 4-leg ratchet variety?

And what does their max height need to be? The blue ones below reach 36cms, the red ones 46cms...

Price for both is much the same.

I have both. Only ever use the 3 leg/pin ones as a last resort. The newer type are so much better.

Good to know MM. Thank you. I'll place the order now. Any idea on height, there are so many varieties. Monsieur Le Grenadier

+1 for the ratchet type. 46cm will be ample. I've got the Halfords 2 tonne version, which has a max height of 43cm, but they don't need to be fully extended to support a Defender axle. Darren

Hi Grenadier,

I've a few sets of axle stands and although ive not used them my mate has and loved them, I have a ratchet set as in your last picture of the red ones..
I bought mine from Costco (I'm sure other shops are available) and from memory they were about £22 - 24

Laser do a 4 leg ratchet one with a pin as well. I got a set from Forum sponsor Opie Oils. Having the pin just gives a nice bit of extra confidence they are locked. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Thanks Bluest, like the idea of the pin as well, but I've already placed the order. Big Cry Monsieur Le Grenadier

I use the 3 leg version with a tube and locking pin.

Now I am sure that I have seen a report of one of those cast metal ratchet stands failing in the last couple of weeks. Sorry I can not remember where I saw that report. IIRC a 2 tonne ratchet stand under a 3 tonne Disco

Now HSE has done some guidelines/case studies HERE . Mainly aimed at commercial but also applies to home mechanics

When I use axle stands I leave the jack in place. Wheel off? that goes underneath vehicle. Chock wheels on ground etc. OK might take a few minutes longer but could save a lifetime of pain.

Blimey Brendan, you can't beat a bit of unsubstantiated sensationalism. As for the Disco, unless somebody was trying to balance the entire car on one stand, then two tonnes should be perfectly adequate. Darren

LRA sorry was not trying to be sensationalist . Now unfortunately I can not find that picture of the failed axle stand I saw about a week ago. That is my mistake.

However if you google failed axle stands you will see several examples of different axle stands which have failed.

I will not work on our Defenders with them just supported by a single axle stand. Will leave the jack in place, put spare wheel under the chassis etc..

If travelling I take a folding axle stand to assist with wheel changing with the axle resting on both jack and axle stand. I would not trust the folding axle stand by itself it is used as a backup to the jack.
