Belt Catastrophe - Steering pump?
Hi Folks!

I had been hearing some humming sounds when the car is in gear. Kind of like a whining humming noise. I've also been noticing prior to this that there has been some fluids dripping from somewhere above the steering damper. This is a LHD 110. 1999 TD5. I thought this might have been from loss of power steering fluid. So i went to buy some ATF (which might have been a mistake). Two days later, I'm driving and the noise isnt getting much better only when in gear! AND THEN! Smoke comes out of the hood, the steering is super stiff and brakes are extremely hard to push down. I open up the hood and this is what it looks like. One of the pulleys the bearings are shot. What could have caused this?

Would it be a steering pump failure or?????

Clearly something has seized up in there and shredded the belt, easy enough to check though, just remove the remains of the belt and spin the relevant pulleys by hand.

you described exactly what happened to me when my steering pump grenaded itself.
Belt burnt, squealed like a pig on the seized steering pump.

New pump time, and it's not that easy to do !

First change the bearings or the whole pully's. If you can spin the pump by hand I would try that first. Roel
