I think that the infant loses any claim to British nationality if the mother is stripped of her British citizenship.

Not sure about that. I was led to believe the child can be a British citizen as it is determined by the day of birth. Hypothetically the child could be brought back to live in the UK to live with grandparents even if the mother is refused.
