Alternator refit
OK, alternator failed, battery light.

I've managed to get the old one off and out but I just cannot seem to get the new one to stay put so I can gently wind in the top bolt. TOp bolt and threadsd are fine - I've checked without the alternator..

Havgin tried to use the belt to hold it up, I think it probably needs someone underneath supporting the not inconsiderable weight of the generator.

Any tips gratefully received.

My 9 year olod wasnnot impressed as I tried to get it on myself last night.

Apparently i was swearing a lot and she sleeps right above where I was working.

I do the same work some time ago.
definitely is not a easy for just one person (almost impossible).
Finally I receive the help of my son to put the alternator in place and be able to fix the bolts.

Cheers! Eduardo

Very encouraging !!!

I found that if you pull the the serpentine belt around the alternator pulleythen you can use the belt to lift the alternator near the top bolt. I also removed the turbo air inlet - careful there is a rubber gasket in there. This gave me room to get my right hand in hold it. A bit hit and miss but a nights sleep and a day at work seemed to make it all doable.

I used a transit alternator aftermarket from Rimmer Brothers where I get a lot of Triumph stuff too. Let’s see how long it lasts.

Btw, I thought these had a freewheel pulley but mine is locked solid to the rotor.

Am I imagining this ? Snowy

IIRC the factory Alternator is freewheel, supposed to save fuel I think and increased efficiency. (Don't quote me on that.)

That thought is a bit sketchy though.
I can't imagine why LR would be though abd the transit type not. Confused Diesel$ Live$ Matter. β›½οΈπŸ›’οΈπŸ‘¨β€πŸ”§πŸ§°βš™οΈ RED, WHITE & BOOST! πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

Given the current location of the alternator, would we benefit from a relocation kit to mount it up higher in the engine bay? In it's current location, dunking it a few times via flood or river crossings will eventually kill it. As already stated, working with it in its current location is no picnic.

I discovered a company in Australia making totally sealed alternators and they are cooled by being plumbed into the coolant stream. Unfortunately, they only do L@nd Crui$er alternators for now. If someone can come up with something like that for us Puma owners, it will be an expensive but really worthwhile upgrade.

If budget is a concern, the aforementioned proposed alternator relocation kit will make more sense.

What do all y'all think?

One attraction of a relocation kit would be the elimination on non-a/c vehicles of that absurd bracket that holds the alternator and the a/c compressor. It is a ridiculous thing that makes access to the fixings for the front branch of the exhaust manifold next to impossible!

I don't see why the alternator couldn't be moved to a location similar to the a/c compressor if you don't have a/c.

True enough, blackwolf. A definite advantage for owners with no A/C. A solution for owners with A/C would be nice too!

I can't see why it can't be done though, some engines have this option.

Mechman make great HO Alternators, but getting a fit maybe easier said than done without being a one off order!

Is there any equivalent in the USA in the Ford line that would fit the 2.4 block? Diesel$ Live$ Matter. β›½οΈπŸ›’οΈπŸ‘¨β€πŸ”§πŸ§°βš™οΈ RED, WHITE & BOOST! πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§
