BAS/ TMD: Upgrades to 2015MY LR90 SW
Hi Folks,
Firstly apologies if this is in the wrong section...

(I will be using our "truck" to tow, but not very far, a Brian James Trailer with a little car inside. Also it will be getting lots of use as a Photography platform. The Missus does photography and that is partly how I managed to convince her to go for it as our "Leisure" vehicle. And also she is also a petrol-head!).

Anyways here are the mods I am considering, based on the positive feedback across the forum, for TMD & BAS:

->TMD450/BAS TUNE, INTERCOOLER, HOSES & FILTER 50BHP – 90NM TORQUE
->DEFENDER® 2.2TDCI VGT HYBRID TURBO
->Defender Short Shift SHIFT-R (V2)
->JW Speaker SmartHeat Headlights – JW Speaker Dual Burn (DRL)
->StarTech Wheel or Momo with Quick-Release

The goal is to make it a little easier to drive when towing with minimum stress on the hard working bits of engine.

All feedback welcome.

Cheers.

Welcome to D2N and Defender ownership (If it's your first?).

I have the BAS170AB remap and BAS Hiflow intercooler mainly for towing horse trailer. The remap transforms the drive completely for the better. You may feel you don't need the hybrid turbo, once you have the remap? Speak to Pete Bell he is the master!!

Having said this I'd love one as the more umph the better, in a fun way, rather than needing it. Trouble is the more go it has then you start needing to look at suspension and brakes! It is never ending!

Startech is the best wheel, but I might be biased. Optimill do a lovely thin quick realease and cap thingy.

I look forward to seeing some lovely photos!! James

Oh and security is the most important modification. Use the search facility for ideas! James

Thanks for the tips James.👍

I had an email exchange with Pete. In fact he responded really quick. Followed up with a long conversation with Paul at TMD. No hard sell and really helpful in explaining the options.

Everything you said mirrors their feedback. With the towing really important for us as we want to make safe progress but obviously not at Ferrari speeds...

Security is a worry. Already decided on a wheel with quick release. Now working out how many security hinges I need to buy.

Please keep the advice coming. I’m learning a lot!

Cheers,
Banbury

Based on the conversation with Pete & Paul, will you be going for the VGT in addition to the tune?

That’s the plan. I think it’s the Turbo Technics unit. It is not going to turn the 2.2 into a rocket but it pairs well the the ECU and the intercooler. Less stress on the engine all round.👍

That’s great info as our plan is similar but not so much long distance.😉
I’m going with the upgrades for towing as I am after the Brian James Race Sport trailer for our track day car.
How have you found it handle towing? Hopefully less effort especially in the first 3 gears?
P.s. great picture!

For sure it will help the top rpm. What we want is a bit more mid range pull. Also the view is the larger unit will be operating with less stress. Hopefully a really good all round package.

Paul has been excellent. Advising and costing the job with some other mods etc.

My challenge is we live in Oxfordshire so scheduling it around my clients is the hard bit! Whistle

A 90, will never tow as well as a 110, but with a small race box, will be fine

The 110 when away on an event, is loaded well, both in the vehicle and trailer,
The Bas remap has been fine,, not felt the need to mess with the turbo ,goy a intercooler sat here to fit sometime
Just order the tool and map from Pete and job done California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

I’m just outside of Banbury and have a Puma with JE Engineering’s 183bhp map and larger intercooler - you’re more than welcome to give it a go.

Get a pedal lock, covers all 3 pedals, many on the market, some sneaky Censored carry spare steering wheels, also get an immobilizer, Gary at Audofile In Car will sort you out

Bonnet hinges should be enough, I replaced my front door handles, no locks.

As people will tell you, they want, they will find a way to take it.

Thank-you for the kind offer Alex. That sounds like a plan.
-I did Google JE - they did seem like a quality outfit.

We are near Kirtlington now so not too far from you.

I’ll PM you once back from hols - well Valentines trip. I get the ‘90 and a holiday for her!
