Problem is the largo carrier is blocking the light in the middle.

I was going to suggest a strip light above the back door, but I've just had a look at the cargo carrier, so that won't work either.
How about mounting a strip light onto the underneath of the carrier?? I'm sure you could put a thin aluminium strip inside the carrier to mount up into, with short bolts, which could then be trimmed or adjusted not to protrude into it, or compromise its loading at all. The wiring could be fed back to the pivot point, and perhaps put into a bit of 'armouring' of some description - like a corrugated cable protector. This way - if you provided new wiring to the new strip light, you could use that when the carrier was in the 'up' position; and the standard light for when the carrier was down? It means you're not messing with the original light, and to be honest, a non-standard strip light, on a non-standard load carrier isn't going to look out of place? I fitted a simple strip light above the rear door with some home made brackets:

Seeing as these have both popped up in the same thread..... Sorry Sphere for the slight hijack  .... I wonder if anyone has had the chance to compare the Mud and Naka options? Obviously there is a cost differential, but not so much that I'd get overly excited about when the time comes. I lean slightly to the 'standard' look of the Naka ones Donald

Yes I looked at putting one above the rear door but as you say.
Currently I have a strip light cable tied to the underside that works well. Little bodged but rigged it up the day before we went away last year and it’s stuck. Think it’s a good possibility. |

I fitted some really decent LED bulbs to my existing lights and it totally transformed their performance. I'd almost go as far as to say it's my favourite mod to date, particularly over the winter. The bulbs weren't cheap at around £25 for three, but still better value than either of the options you've highlighted. Thanks Darren - I do actually have a couple of those 'cheapy-ish' LED panels which fit in the existing light holders. They do work fine (when the headlining's actually in the car!) but as I am going to be re-furbishing the headlining, I thought I'd explore other options which might give a little more functionality.
For example, I thought I might find some units for the front which offered small 'reading lights' either side of the main light. There's a P38 Range Rover unit that might work. It wouldn't look standard, but the extra function might be worth it. For the Naka and Mud ones, the option for a red light is tempting - particularly for the front of the car. If someone needs to light something up while I'm driving, I wouldn't lose any 'night vision'. Just looking at options - not quite 'idly', but just to see what's out there, and what folks impressions are.
