More random thoughts after reading the previous thread. that axle breakage didn't just happen. It'd been slowing letting go for a long time. In doing so, the front tyres would have had to work hard. Interestingly, when you swapped the tyres over, it was worse. Thing is, you cannot be sure that the tyres are on the side they were , before the axle was replaced. i would swap front, to rear wheels, that way you know the rears have had no adverse wear due to slowly degrading miss alignment, and then see if it pulls. Can you not take it back to where the axle was swopped. 'Volvo XC 70, taking the rough with the smooth’

The old axle went with a bang, it gradually pulled to the left for 5-10 mins beforehand . It was a recall on the later models , mine missed out by a few months. Total failure of the nearside axle casing to swivel weld.

Today i had a play with the steering, removed shaft which was stiff but nothing untoward. Then went to recentre the steering box and noticed that the steering rod has absolutely no more adjustment available and is at it’s shortest possible setting. This make me think that the steering box drop arm is in the wrong position .

Is this possible ? I was under the impression it only went on 1 of 4 ways and would therefore have to be 90 degrees out !

I won’t go back to the place that changed the axle, it came back with a spring not located properly and a track rod ball joint rattling about and not torqued down.

Are you talking about the drag link? The shaft that goes from steering box to wheel hub?

If so is it will be wrong if drop arm is wrong.

Yes the drag link is set to its minimum length with no more adjustment available.

Out of interest does anyone know approximately how much thread they have visible or the overall length of their drag link from ball joint to ball joint ? I’d like to know just how far Mine is out and if the drop arm needs to come off and be relocated a turn
