Bilstein etc steering dampers. Interesting video.
This video has come up on FB and I’m wondering of peoples opinion?
My defender pulls ever so slightly to the right and it’s not tracking, swivels, wheel or tyre related so this is interesting as the motor came with a Bilstein steering damper from the previous owner. The feel of the steering is fine, but I have not driven fitted wit a working OE steering damper so can’t compare.

What this guy is saying makes a lot of sense to me....

I agree, you should not have a steering damper that is not neutral

Terrafirma did a self centering horrible one with a spring on the outside that also doesn’t work.

Just take yours off and try it. It won’t do any harm, and you may not even notice the difference on a smooth road, it’s only when on rough stuff does it work, taking the bounce out.

I used to use an old man emu one that was neutral, so didn’t push or pull just damped the vibrations, and an upgrade from the standard.

I saw this on FB yesterday and the video seems to make sense to my unmechanically minded brain. I'd be interested to see other more intelligent peoples opinions. James

I have one supplied with my Bilstein suspension kit, but i am in two minds whether to bother fitting it, now i watched the video i am leaning towards not bothering. Has anyone fitted these and can suggest what the difference is? Mine is a 2008 TDCI 35,000 miles?
I like this guys videos makes alot of sense, and why gas over oil as standard?
I will watch this with interest.

I’ve had mine fitted for the last couple hundred miles. No unwanted steering to one side. Less play when driving straight and a more connected to the wheels feeling when going around the corners. Steering feels quite nice to be honest. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

Mine was fitted a couple of thousand miles back last year. Honestly I can't tell the difference between it and the factory item.
I bought it as a set with the bilstein shock absorbers but if I was to start again I wouldn't bother with the steering damper and just get the shocks, which are superb.

I have a terrafirma unit on mine, and I have to say it didn't really do anything either, in fact I don't think terrafirma stuff is all that good either really, Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

I agree. Terrafirma stuff is not good. They have a few good products, like all the stuff they stole from Gwyn Lewis, and other producers. They just copy good stuff, and get in made in China,

I have the same findings as Roy. Better in a straight line and no unwanted pull to the side. Stu...

Yeah, the dampers I had on were just as bad as the ones that I removed, and the steering damper wasn't really all that either. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
