Slovenia 2004 Defender 90 Td5 XS CSW Galway Green
Heated Rear Screen
I have a 2004 Td5 XS CSW and for some time the heated rear screen hasn't been fully functional. The screen has two elements and the lower one works fine but not the higher one. With winter coming on I thought I'd have a look at it and I've checked the element and all is fine with that, as is the wiring down to the first connector (C0704) behind the rear speaker panel on the driver's side. I have discovered though that there is no power on the Green/Purple feed in socket 2 of the C0704 connector which seems to be the supply for the upper element. Checking the fuses and relays there only seems to be one relay and fuse for the heated rear screen yet there are two live wires (although one is dead). The wiring diagrams I can find only show one supply.

Do both live feeds come from the one relay/fuse? If so I must have a dodgy connection somewhere on the green/purple line which I can trace but just want to make sure there isn't another relay somewhere.....

The green/purple wire is the feed to the high level brake light. The other 'element' that you mention is the earth for the brake light.

The heated screen is all one element so if only part of it is working then there's a break in the tracks somewhere. A common point of failure is where the tracks pass under the high level brake light housing as the latter wears the former away. Later screens are altered to take those tracks around the housing. Darren

Cheers Darren, only I'm now confused.

The heater element has three connections - two on the right being the handle side and one on the left by the hinges. The lower half of the screen shows power at the connector when it's working and the other one doesn't. Both elements show continuity so I assume they are OK. I've also traced both live cables back to the connector and each has a separate plug and each shows continuity to the plugs mentioned for the C0704 connector but only one feed has power for the relevant socket.

Is there only one relay? In which case could I not splice a cable onto the working live to get the other element going?

Are two elements to improve performance?

Interesting post. Since I installed my Puma rear door on my 2000 MY 110 I have noticed that the upper part also takes much longer to clear than the lower section, which is almost immediate. I have traced the lines and all are good with no breaks. I also get a full 12.5 volts to the wire feeding the window element. The grounds are also good. Continuity is good throughout the entire element. After two years of electronic engineering at college I think I now know why I never finished that degree. does the heat element on the glass run under the plastic housing that covers the high level brake light?

if it does then it's quick possible / likely that it's worn away the heater element creating an open circuit.


....not sure that the fix is though?

Over here you can pick up a copper paint like product at almost any automotive store and paint on lines to complete the circuit if it is found to be worn or broken.

mine is temperamental, but I thought that was due to the element coming away from the glass in a couple of places.. I need to get a volt checker thing and test them now.. Regards

I've just re-read my reply and realised I didn't explain part of it properly.

There are three connections on the screen - two on the right and one on the left. The two right hand ones are power to the heated screen and brake light respectively. The one on the left is the common earth for both devices. Darren

Thanks Darren,

Once I’d re-read your post, thought about it and then went and had a look it all became clear. Thanks for that. Looks as if it’s something I’ll have to live with. Seems the angry pixies don’t go all the way to the top of the screen. I’ll take the cover off the brake light in the morning and see if I can see any breaks in the element.

Mines the same, the top part of the element doesn’t work. It was the same on both our 90 TD5’s and l assume it’s the high level brake light wearing through the element at the top.

A continuity test will show a circuit in these broken tracks as the elements are in parallel between the positive and negative lines.

So if you put a meter across the top element between positive and negative it will show a circuit as the rest of the elements are still good.
