Actual oil pressure for 2.4 tdci
I am measuring idle at 5 bar / 72psi on a mechanical oil pressure gauge plumbed into the oil pressure switch port.

This pressure seems high. What are actual pressures you guys have tested on your engines?

The workshop manual states:

Quote:
Engine - 2.4L Duratorq-TDCi HPCR (103kW/140PS) - Puma
Oil pressure specifications
Minimum oil pressure at idle speed: 1.25 bar
Minimum oil pressure at 2000 rpm: 2.0 bar

Cold idle is anything between 5 & 7 bar depending on the ambient temperature.

Hot idle is 1.6 bar Thumbs Up --

Yes - I found those values in the manual, but have not been able to find what the “typical range” is.

these are on my 90, they've been like that since I bought it new in 2010.

I have a Madman EMS installed, so I can see the oil pressure, coolant temp, transfer box temp, and EGT in real time.

The EMS2 gauge that I installed is what started my questions. I pulled the sensor to put the mechanical gauge on and I was under the impression that 5 bar was too high as Madman now supplies a 0-5 bar sensor as standard unit.

5 bar for cold idle is not that high, I've seen mine go up to 7 in winter (when I still had the old 10 bar gauge).

what is important is hot idle, just make sure it's between 1.4 and 1.7, every engine will be slightly different, but as long as it's above 1.2-1.3, you're fine.

Set your alarm for 1.2 bar, so that if the engine loses oil, you have ample warning before a catastrophic seizure. --

Oil Pressure started out at 4.5 bar and when engine was warmed up it settled into 2+ bar.

There is a difference of approx. 0.4 barg for warm oil (>50°C) depending on viscosity. If I use 10W oils, I land at 1.6barg and with 0W oils the pressure corresponds to the manual specification.

Oil pressure will be highly dependent on oil viscosity, ambient temps (when car is cold) and engine rpm.
I'm also using a Madman gauge, and was going nuts at the beginning as I was seeing very different values, and couldn't figure out what was normal.

When the car is cold in summer, I see over 4.5 bar at idle. In winter (cold car) I often see over 5.5-6.5 bar at idle.

The only comparable (and reliable) values are when the car is warm, and at idle: With the recommended oil-spec I see 1.6-1.7 bar.

Also noteworthy is that I had an intermittent issue with the sensor, that was going to full-scale, and reading maximum values over 10bar... even when the car was off Laughing Changed sensor fixed that.
