Puma 130 rear diff
Hi all, cheers

The rear differential in my '08 spec 130 is vibrating excessively, randomly. Sometimes it vibrates alot making vibration noises but most of the time behaves normally, everything works fine. Expecting the worse, how true is it that the rear diff in 130's from those years is the same as in p38 range rovers? from which years? Scrapyards are loaded with them here so it would probably be an easy and cheap swap, being this possible of course! 2nd thought, being lucky enough it just needs bearings, which are the best I can buy online, is there some sort of kit? 3rd scenario which are the differential possible upgrades just in case I need a full replacement? It has 274k km on the clock, oil changed every 4 motor oil changes or so, only had one oil leak fixed under warranty other than that, the diff has never been opened. shaft checked etc

Thanks in advance for the help

Mack

Not sure how to check it Whistle I checked all the bolts and all are in place and tight greased every week

If you decided to go for a diff rebuild then Xcess4x4 is the company I'd suggest

You'd need the 4-gear P38 diff which was used on the more powerful P38s and is harder to find. The 2-gear (commonplace) one will fit but not last long. You could use one as the basis of an ATB or Airlocker build though.

The rear diffs are a bit of a weak point, seen a few go whereas the old Salisbury went on and on.

To be honest if I was in the UK I would get a diff built up by either Ashcroft or Xcess and exchange it. Good time to add something like an ATB to the order and make it really worth doing Thumbs Up

If I had a noisy one I wouldn't bother trying to do a DIY refurb to be honest. You need several special tools to do it properly so unless you have a very well equipped garage it is better left to those with the tools. ---

It's not hard to overhaul a diff properly but it isn't a job for a novice.
