just looking at the size / shape could it be where the main wiring loom went? It looks a similar size to the hole near the brake servo in the bulkhead - where the bonnet release cable and wiring loom go through the bulkhead and has a large rubber gasket?

Maybe a Haynes manual will show it since they use photos rather than drawings.

You couldn't get a loom through that hole with the heater in place.

As far as I know that pressing was new to and unique to the Puma bulkhead (anyone know different, or have a photo of an earlier bulkhead with that hole?) in which case it suggests it was for a purpose that was never pursued.

Could it be that at some time there were thoughts of bringing the coolant pipes for the heater up though the tunnel rather than through the bulkhead (the holes seem to be generally similar in size)?

That does seem to be a logical idea Blackwolf, althought the hole is alot larger that the current pipe hole on the bulkhead.

I think i've found the blanking plug for the hole here;

https://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/240...l_defender

The size is pretty spot on.

Also, i did find 2 different part numbers for the gearbox tunnel;

LR029564 superseded by LR057161

https://www.landroverworkshop.com/diagrams...nels_44820

Still doesn't answer why it was there originally, the quest for that answer continues

I think there's something wrong with that Britcar entry as exactly the same part number shows that it's the blanking plug for the two holes on either side of the fuse box position on earlier bulkheads and is much smaller:

https://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/873...l_defender

The holes are just visible above the gearbox aperture on the pic below:

Looking at the other blanking plugs, there are different sizes in the pictures, but the details shows the same size ( 130 x 110 x 10mm )

OEM number MTC1650

One picture shows a smaller plug at 55mm x ? x ?

The other picture with the britpart looks to be a similar size @ 55mm...

Who knows what you'll receive if you order the one in the original link...

Whatever it is, if it is Britpart it probably won't be what you want or will be defective!

And it's working. We're actually able to listen to audiobooks on the motorway.
The hole is there to compensate for that, if you can't stand the silence.

It's why I love this site more than any other. It's this level of attention to detail and subject matter knowledge (geekiness?) that makes this forum so good. This hole can be discussed until the cows come home and we'll all keep reading the posts and occasionally offer a thought. Censored intellectualism, the arts, geo-politics, war, etc etc. Let's keep things simple, let's keep things honest, let's discuss holes. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've removed the insulation and covered the entire bulkhead in 10mm pu foam as well as butyl pads in certain areas and then refitted it.
