I managed to lock my keys in my old 90 & was panicking as I was in the middle of a wood 40 miles from home & my spare keys... my mate told me not to panic & pushed the end of his Hilux key into the lock & simply unlocked the door
What appears to happen is that over time the tumblers get stuck in the 'key in' position so the barrel can be turned using anything that fits into the lock. Best to get a replacment lock set |

Don't forget, if you're replacing the ignition lock you'll need a couple of security bolts as well.
