300tdi mpg post rebuild
A thousand miles post a full rebuild and the engine is returning precisely 30mpg. And not leaking Very Happy

That's interesting both for the mileage and the 'rebuild' - have you posted any details of that anywhere? Donald

No, don’t get the wrong idea, the rebuild was done by Chris Wall, a local independent who has always looked after my landys. My technical knowledge enables me to just about find the ignition barrel with the key.

The head gasket started going, which lead to head off, head tested and found cracked, head replaced, cylinders scored so a rebore, injectors hosing fuel out, injector pump knackered, radiator re-cored, conrods replaced, all new hoses and wiring tidied up. Oh and a new clutch. I left it with him with a ‘I’m not in a hurry’ which ended up not getting it back for 10 months. However, he’s done a great job. The engine sounds very happy and pulls well. The pick up is now my daily driver and the P38 is off into storage whilst I save up for a few jobs to be done. Good to have the old bus back!

That sounds great though - and it's the original engine left in which counts for a lot I think.

I certainly couldn't take on anything like that myself. Unbolt/refit jobs are OK with me, but anything more technical I'd have to leave mine with a garage too.

It has two creature comforts too -heated seats and electric windows. The only reason for electric windows is so I don’t bash my leg on the winder!

After the rebuild the heater gets to temperature much faster, which is welcome on the station run in the morning!

If you’ve not already, got the injectors redone too, not too expensive and will make it even better Thumbs Up A lot of Tdi problems come from old injectors being worn out.

Yes, the injectors were replaced, they were squirting fuel out like a hose pipe! I think that is what has made the most difference with the mpg!

Yeah for the price of getting them reconditioned I think it’s one of the best improvements on an old Tdi. The amount of people that would benefit from getting the injectors redone instead of fitting boost pins and turning star wheels, big turbos, massive inercoolers and are running original injectors with 250k on them leave my head shaking Rolling Eyes with

No idea re calibration of the injectors sorry.

I’ve just done 32mpg on the last tank and it included a lot of stop start on farm tracks and the kids driving it around the field for a bit. Happy with that.

I’ve got a set of reconditioned injectors sitting ready for my 200Tdi. I figured it needs them as the ones in it have now done 336,000 miles. But there’s been no effect on fuel economy that I have noticed over the past 200k, still averages well over 30mpg. 33.2mpg on the last tank.

It’ll be interesting to see if there is any effect when I finally get around to swapping them.

What are you waiting for man the apocalypse? On a Tdi it’s not like they take long to swap. Speak to Turners and they’ll tell you that failures on Tdi are very often down to injector failure- you’ve got to be at least 3 times over the replacement mileage, you trying to get some Scottish value for money out of them?
