Advice please - 110 TD5 HiCap pickup Wheels & tyres
Hi, I’m new to this forum. Have had a HiCap pickup for about 7 years in Hampshire area. Last MOT 2 tyres were advisory for replacement. Currently has std steel wheels with Avon Rangemaster 7.5 R16 tyres. So clever clogs searches eBay and finds some alloy wheels with tyres - quite cheap. Land Rover genuine alloys with 235/70R16 tyres - bought them and fittted the wheels. BUT, Think I have dropped a clanger ! new wheels+ tyres were much smaller by 3-4” diameter. Vehicle sits much lower and now looks a bit silly !. Plus the speedometer is now way out - at reading 70mph my SatNav says I’m doing 56mph. Yesterday they were nearly the same readings with original tyres.
Did I buy the wrong size ??? Any comments welcome

235 85 16 is roughly the same size as 7.50
The alloys you have with 70 profile are normally found on Discovery models.

Hi, as above, the tyres you have are Dicovery 1 size. Approx 29" overall diameter.

The standard diameter for a 110 tyre is approx 32". Size options are 7.50R16 (same as the old Rangemaster), 235/85R16 as fitted on nearly all Defenders with factory alloy wheels, or 265/75R16 which was a factory option for a while and export spec for North America.

The alloy wheels you've got are "Freestyle" type, they were factory fitted to some Defender 90s. The load rating may not be suitable for a 110 high cap. Leading to insurance problems if there is ever cause to look closely at your vehicle after a claim.

Many thanks for the replies/comments. I think I will revert to originals and put the alloys back on EBay. I often load up with logs, so load capacity is a significant issue;

As above really.

I would say 235/85/16 tyres are a minimum on a 110, especially a Hicap, even if just because of the looks.

Best buy alloys for the Hicap are the LR Boost Alloys as they are rated for the weight. The Discovery Freestyle alloys are not IIRC.

Then there are the LR steel wheels, of which any will be rated high enough for the Hicaps weight, but the wolf style look great. Just be aware that the traditional LR steel wheels are quite thin and restrict the size of tyre you can fit on them/ IIRC 265/75/16 is the accepted maximum.

Personally, I would be looking for a set of take off boost alloys with continental cross contact tyres on them. Great all round bundle. Failing that and if the budget allowed, a set of Boost alloys shod with a set of 285/75/16 tyres. These will fill the arches, especially the cavernous rear arch of the Hicap.

Photo is of mine with the Boost + 285 setup and the comparison between a 235/85/16 and 285/75/16 tyre.

Hindsight - 20:20 right... Rolling Eyes

Keep an eye out on eBay, FB market place, preloved etc for a set of rims local to you. There are bargains to be had out there you just have to wade through the dross to find them.

Yep. You're not on your own though! Thumbs Up I did it with a set of alloys on my pick up a few years ago and they looked like shirt buttons! I sold them quite quickly and picked up some new take off steel wheels with the Michelin Latitude tyre on, all sorted.

On the upside, you'll appreciate the difference when you go back to the right size!! Very Happy

I've got a set of Boost wheels available if you are interested. I'm currently in Hampshire but moving to London on 1st October so would be keen to see them gone!

I have a set of 4 part worn AT2 tyres in 265/75/16 if you're interested? Was going to take them up to Newbury 4x4 autojumble the weekend after next but happy to sell before then. Not at home at the moment but will get some tread depth measurements & photos tomorrow morning if you like? Happy to negotiate a price once I have taken the pics & measurements so we both know what they're like. I'm a bit east of Winchester so pretty central Hampshire.

On the plus side, you've now found D2N, the fountain of all LR knowledge and a great place to double check anything Defender related! Welcome Thumbs Up But it may cost you a fortune!!

That is a great look Hi-cap!! Personally, I think I stay steel wheels or Blindo's, but purely done to personal preference and budget! James
