My engine doesn't like the recent cold mornings. The erratic tick over is there until it reaches temperature, after being ok in the warmer weather. So I have ordered a replacement VCV. Having read the various forum threads on the subject, this seems to be the usual fix.
As I don't have access to a device that will do the learning and the nearest Indy or Dealer is some distance away, I have a few questions: Will the engine start and run ok after I fit the new VCV. Does it eventually learn itself. If not, how far is it safe to drive, to get to a dealer in order to have the learning done. I beleive that the vcv will relearn over time, just that it’s quicker to do the learn by programming.

Same as Bluest.

If you fancy spending another £15 you can get an appropriate OBDII adaptor and use the free FORscan software to do the pump learn etc.
I did mine the other day (see my thread a little further down the page) without changing the VCV and it has been like a different vehicle to drive. Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon Then: 2004 2.5 TD5 90 Hard Top (X-Tech Edition) |

I have been faffing aroung for 2 days and endless times to do the Pilot Learning thg with my gap tool
All I get is Learning not completed status 17 (very clear as a message  )
and operation failed E7 Total PITA. Wrote to Gap. No joy No idea what to do anymore Diesel, oil and air filter are new and OEM. So is the head gasket and a lot more. dunno what to do anymore. When I connect 12 v shortly to the VCV it moves. Anything else I can do? Fixing Land Rovers in rural Guanacaste |

Hmmm. Now I have a dilemma. Do I replace the VCV and not bother with the re-learn or do I down load the software and just try a pump learn. I must admit I am not comfortable dealing with software and electricery, I'm more of a nuts, bolts and spanner person.

I didn't. Having read loads of threads on this forum, it seems the most common cause of lumpy/erratic idling, when the engine is cold, is the VCV valve. For the sake of £30 from PF Jones and an hour of my time, I thought I would give it a go.

If you do replace it. Take the piston out of the old one and have a look for any scoring or wear. I’m convinced this is what causes the problem. Mine had some light scoring on it. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

We had it out yesterday.
Connected it to 12 v shortly and it moves. But how do I get the  thing to reprogram
I can do the high pressure pump learning but not the pilot learning. It always (about 56 times now) break off after 5 seconds and throws up status 17 and error e7 The car has no power, (all filters new OEM, new head gasket new oil cooler) and everybody tells me it needs relearning. I had problems after installing the BAS remap on my TDCI, I tried to do the pump relearn and pilot correction but it consistently failed. After speaking to Pete Bell at BAS he said to fit a new VCV which I subsequently did, pilot correction and pump relearn then went through 1st time.
I don’t think it is possible to repair the vcv and as it is an inexpensive part it is just easier to replace. Some useful information here on the BAS website including a little video on what the vcv does. |

Till it gets here it is sadly worth about the triple of the £59 you guys pay. plus I can't get it faster than 10 days
I connected it to a battery and yes it moves. But the real question is what conditions need to be met to reprogram the pump and injectors. Apart from 75 degrees [difficult] and no faults other than learning not done. My boss is going berserk as I am not getting any joy. I cant recall the error message I got but the issue in my case (with failed learning procedures) was that the engine was not staying in the correct temperature range for the full duration of the test. Quite hard to achieve if it's cold out... Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Thank you agentmulder, I suspected that but we managed to heat it up doing 10 minutes i second gear but then I found it in the end..
