Fuel tank breather.
My fuel tank breather has broken. The thin pipe in the left hand wheel arch with the roll over valve and the shepherd ‘s crook bend at the end. I think it took a bit of a hammering from stones off the rear wheel and broke in two just prior to the bend. It’s temporarily fixed, but do people relocate or protect it at all to prevent a repeat? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

they usually perish and leak, there is a longer version from Land Rover dealers now.

To stop it getting a battering fit a Gywn Lewis mud shield and mudflap brakes kit

2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Stornoway Grey
While not really related to what happened to the original poster, there seems to be flow through my roll over valve and diesel spills through it. So I guess I need to upgrade to the new one as well?

^^ Yes, or get rid of it altogether.

If you still have the breather exiting in the RNS wheel arch area it is an extremely good idea to relocate it somewhere drier and cleaner, since you will inevitably get the "diesel bug" (in fact you will probably already have it by now) as a result of the persistent damp and dirty conditions around the breather. If the micro-organisms make it past the filter they will damage the VCV. If they don't make it past the filter eventually the filter will become blocked.

Locating the breather in that location was not one of Landrover's finest moments.

Thanks all, so I have two options. Renew the factory one and fit a Gwyn Lewis kit to give it some protection, or relocate elsewhere. Bit the question is where to?

I extended mine up into the space between the nearside "speaker panel" and the brake/tail light unit, but my vehicle is a double cab so this is not in a habitable compartment.

A further advantage is that it makes it easy to bleed the fuel system if necessary, just pressurise the tank via the breather (in emergency blow hard) and Bob's your uncle.

The problem with extending the existing one is they have a habit of perishing where they join the tank, so you could extend it, then 2 weeks later have to replace it anyway.

The Gywn Lewis mud shields also protect the cross member, cut down most of the mud that gets thrown up the side of the vehicle, give a much better support to the rear quarter panel and remove the risk of your rear mudflap falling off. So they're well worth fitting regardless of what you do with the breather.

OP's vehicle appears to be an '07, so won't have the perishing problem on the breather, only on the filler vent. Later vehicles had the breather connected into the filler vent. The earlier arrangement was less bad!
