Fenella gets a light resto.
Today I started a long overdue tidy up on Fenella,
I’ve had her for nearly 5 years now, and In that time she’s taken us up and down and all over the country,
She’s never missed a beat, and never let me down!

She’s a 52, with a earlier front end, a very sweet factory reconditioned 2ltr, and factory recon Series 2 box, and a completely silent O/D! Combined with 6.50 tyres she will happily sit at 60/65mph comfortably on a motorway

I can honestly say I would happily drive her around the world if I ever had a chance. Razz

When I got her, she had been recently brush painted, which I wasn’t very keen on but it looked tidy, and it had a nice folder of history/paperwork.

I’ve run her without any real issues, the only major one last summer was a slight clutch slip with the Overdrive engaged, the crank oil seal had started leaking and contaminated the clutch.

Anyway, the paint job had always bugged me, it was full of dust and grit, brush marks, and areas that hadn’t been done,
But oddly always looked tidy!
It was always on the cards to repaint, as time went on patches flaked off, due to no primer, but I kept putting it off,
The last straw was a pressure washing session after a day on Salisbury plain, the paint on the wings came off in sheets!

I’ve been slowly stripping the paint back for a while now, I was trying to just remove the top layer and save the original,
But sadly this wasn’t possible as it was all too far gone, so I started to bare metal the panels.

First thing Today, I made a start on the bonnet.

Before...

Bonnet painted, and fitted back up, I’ve been in and out our local paint shop all week playing with colours,
I did the wheels a few years ago, so matched it with them, which is Deep Bronze green with a satin finish.

On to the front panel.

Next the wings!
a good hose off was needed to remove parts of Salisbury plain that I didn’t realise was there!
These are a Lovely early straight pair of wings, shame about the added indicators Rolling Eyes
Again Always on my list to remove, I much prefer them tucked up under the bumper, then the numberplate can sit on the wing properly.

I cut a piece from a series 3 wing, used countersunk rivets and blanked the hole,
A skim of filler done the job, just need to skim some stopper over it in the morning, and I can get it in primer and move on to the other one.

That was it for today, I’m now debating on removing the bulkhead, and getting it blasted before painting?
But I know if that happens it will turn into a full on resto project!

Nice work Ian Thumbs Up I have to say the second picture with unpainted ally bodywork is very appealing. A guy up this part of the World has an 86in SW fully stripped of paint and has been for as long as I can remember. I have always admired that vehicle too.

Thanks Thumbs Up

When I first stripped the paint, the bonnet and wings and doors were like mirrors, pity the tub had been rubbed down previously, so it didn’t match and had a dull finish,

I know what you mean though, they do look nice in bare alloy Wink 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

No, it’s one of the ones John Craddock had made in the early 90s,
Basically a copy of an aluminium bulkhead, but uses steel instead of alloy.

It’s actualy in very good condition for its age, considering it’s never been looked after!
That’s why I’m thinking about getting it blasted, and putting a nice coat of paint on to it. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Cheers chaps.

This is one I really am trying not to get carried away with!
It’s tricky, it needs some attention, chassis and bulkhead has surface rust, which if left for a few more years will start to get to a stage you don’t want to be at?

I know if the bulkhead comes off, a bare chassis will be next Rolling Eyes Laughing

We will see..... Thumbs Up

Bit more today, concentrated on the wings.
Same as the other one, rivet a plate to cover the indicator hole,
And make good, you can see how low the numberplate sits on the wing, something I was never happy with.

Countersunk rivets and alloy patch, this wing had a few dings and dents, mainly from the door handle hitting the wing,
These wings never had the rubber buffer.

All primed, and ready for top coat.

Top coat next, 2 coats then flat back with 1200 wet and dry, then one good final coat.

I must say, I was very pleased with the way the wings came out.

Still had some time, so prepped and painted the rad, ready to bolt back on to the front panel.

Cheers guys Thumbs Up

I’ve stripped the whole 80” with this...

https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Heavy-Duty-Indust...SwoFZaqSEe

This stuff is awsome, not like the rubbish you get now.
It took the first few coats off instantly, the original paint took a bit more soaking, but still gave up easily.

Radiator was painted with tough black....

https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tough-Black-Gloss...Sw1u5bBZ2-

Really nice hard wearing paint, this is what I use to paint Series steering wheels with,
Slow to dry, but Drys rock hard Thumbs Up 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"
