Registration Plate
Just fitted the new winch & bumper - but come across the same old issue of where to mount the registration plate.

I still need to change the rope and fairlead to synthetic so could make up a couple a brackets there but still not sure I will like it there -

2 Spots also to go on the A frame so can't put on the grill .........

What is the legal position if I put this on the front of the roof rack ? Is this allowed and legal ?

I recall AndrewS answering this one whilst off topic on another subject. His reply was:

AndrewS wrote:
Just had a chat with some V nice traffic police at the OK Dinner on the A49 in Leominster. ... I pointed out the number plate on the front of my rack and they said that its probably not in the correct place but is clearly visible, they could understand why its up there as there is no decent place to mount it on the bumper and is out of harms way. As far as they (3) are concerned they would not bother pulling me for it.

I don't think there is anything illegal about putting the number plate on the front of the roofrack provided that the plate is in a vertical plane facing the front. I *think* that the main legal requirement for front plates (which is less specific than that for rears) says something along the lines that they must be clearly visible to someone standing 20 or so metres in front of the vehicle. There isn't, as far as i know, a restriction on height, but they must of course be the proscribed type (correct colour, font, and spacing). It is generally accepted, though not as far as I know established by case law, that adhesive number plates are not legal, not least because they tend to be stuck on the leading edge of the bonnet where they face more upwards than forwards.

When I fitted my winch I had the same dilemma as you, except I don't have a roof rack. In the end I fixed mine to the front grill with cable ties; it looks fine, doesn't cause any airflow problems and is well out of harm's way. This wouldn't be an option if I had extra lights fitted therem of course. Incidentally I did the same with my winch-equipped Disco 2 - cable ties to grill.

Cheers for info

Looks like thats where it's going meantime -

I asked in a well known Car Accessory shop - Don't know was their reply -

I aslo asked if they would make up a smaller plate that would fit on the bumper - even keeping the lettering to the correct size and spacing - - - No - we can't do that was reply.

Will have a look on web later for someplace that will do one - even if it is not 100% surely between that and the one on the roof - PC plod will not have an issue -

I put mine in front of the fairlead - added advantage of stopping crap going in there.

I have both the one to mount on the top of the bumper and the one to go behind the fairlead and bumper (admitedly missing the clips which i know where to get but never did).

£20+ some postage if you needed - i can supply some pics Mike

Putting on Roof rack just now but would like to have the option of mounting in front of winch and being able to remove quickly when using the winch -

Where can the clips referred to above be purchased ? Defender 110 County SW

Search for lynch pin. Should be around 30p each
