TD5 Flat Battery
Evening all,

Does anyone have any experience of TD5 battery issues?

Twice in the last 10 days I have had a virtually dead battery with no prior warning. Starter turning nicely in proceeding days and then suddenly insufficient charge to turn it over.

I have tested the alternator and it appears to be pumping out sufficient juice, I have also checked stereo connections, interior light etc for any potential drains. The only thing I haven't been able to do is test the battery itself, will be checking that later in the week when I get hold of a tester.

On both occasions it has started instantly with a mobile starter unit and subsequently appears to hold its charge with the alternator appearing to do its job.

Thoughts welcomed.

Cheers

Steve

Nothing lurking in an auxilary 12v socket that's fed direct off the battery is there ? Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.

Nothing, did get into the habit of leaving in a USB charge adapter that had a power indicator but stopped doing that. Have also checked and the sub isn't drawing anything whilst off (head unit control wire appears to be doing its job.....)

Confused of Cheltenham.

Have you checked to see that the battery is actually flat and that it's not the leads have become loose or filled with corrosion?

The leads are fine, still secure and no corrosion.

ok, in that case do you know how old the battery is? Mine gave up age 9 and gave similar symptoms, fine one minute and useless the next.

Difficult to know as I have only had it since last year but it looks as if its original so potentially 8 years old.....did you pick up that it was duff with a battery test?

Yes, one day (once i'd filled the 90 to the rafters including the passenger seat) i turned the key and nothing. Had to call out the RAC who diagnosed a duff battery, although it would have charge after a 40minute run it would lose it within 24hrs. So i replaced it with another genuine battery (around £125) and not had a problem since.

The dealer was unable to diagnose anything untoward other than the battery was old and not capable of holding a full charge.
Battery replaced without quibble under their own warranty Thumbs Up

The only down side is that they had a rather nice 110USW in. I had a drive, now I want one Big Cry

Agree with you on James French - I once bought a P38 DSE from them and the warranty / support was 100%.

My only gripe with them was that they offered me such a good price price for my old TD5 110 against the P38 that I did the deal (and then missed the Defender Rolling with laughter ) John

Am very tempted by the USW they have......I am not VAT registered though so it makes it bloody pricey for an 08. It is in excellent condition though.
