My old Ninety has "Bog-standard durability"

Wouldn't that be a better selling point?

The big problem I had with the last of the Defenders was the price bracket they were in

When you pay less you expect less - so when Land Rover started ramping up the prices they were aiming for owners of cars that don't leak, fall apart or arrive rusty from brand new.

I had a friend who sold a BMW M5 for a Silver Edition 110 a few years back. He was horrified that it leaked from every door seal the first rained and that I told him this was quite normal Laughing Every bolt on the tow bar was rusty, the paint finish was terrible on the bottoms of the doors and it was back at the dealers quite a few times with various niggly issues.

When you pay £40k for a fully loaded Defender you don't expect to find a puddle on the floor after washing it either... so needless to say he handed it back to them fairly quickly and bought an Audi for around the same money. 2013 Discovery 4 HSE Lux | 2001 Defender 90 TD5 | 2007 Prodrive RB320

Exactly that.
No one believes the marketing BS.
Premium = expensive.
Durability was always questionable. Unlikely to change.
