Despite being a woodbutcher myself, completed my apprenticeship in 1989 and not touched the tools since so my knowledge is basic to say the least.
A possible house purchase is on the cards and there is a garage at the bottom of the garden. The roof trusses are Fink (is that a style?) and it reduces my headroom considerably. I want to gain internal height so after a Raised tie roof. http://www.etstrusses.co.uk/products/roof-trusses/ Can I just fir new ties in place and then remove the pieces of the fink roof I don't need but still keep the roof on the garage? Or does the roof need to come off and start again. 110 D250 SE HT 110 USW SOLD RRE HSE Dynamic Gone, wife killed it VOLVO XC60 R Dynamic with some toys Polaris RZR 900XP SOLD |

Lovely looking house!
As for the garage, being brick built with slat roof I'd say not a cheap or easy job, but anything is possible! You need to take advice from a structural engineer. The garage on the house looks like it has potential to raise the door? Or isn't it a garage inside? Garage is breeze block with a fancy stone face.
The single garage is a garage, opens up inside to about 1 1/2 garage. Loads of room. The neighbours have a covenant on the garage. Not sure how that happened but it stops us making habitable space from the garage. But not sure exactly what habitable space is. Lawyers are tasked with finding me a proper definition 110 D250 SE HT 110 USW SOLD RRE HSE Dynamic Gone, wife killed it VOLVO XC60 R Dynamic with some toys Polaris RZR 900XP SOLD |

No worries. I'm a bit of an IT biff. I can blow stuff up and basically do demolition with all sorts of explosives, teach you how to find IED's but IT scares the crap out of me

I would bolt in some raised ties and lower ties at each end

We did one a few years ago, Structural Engineer had us strip off the tiles and felt and basically build a cut roof around the trusses, then cut the offending parts of the original trusses away - it was a faf!
Would have been quicker and cheaper to rip all the old trusses off and build a new cut roof from scratch. Good luck Keith |

I'm afraid it isn't as simple as adding collar ties and removing the existing ceiling joists to create more height.
The weight on the roof will be significant with tiles ( slate is less ) and that weight is pushing downwards and has to be distributed somewhere, at present, with the current roof the rafters can be of a smaller size due to the strength being shared through ceiling joists, collar ties, purlins and props. With a raised tie style you will need a larger dimension rafter as they will be taking the weight without the added benefit of the above. It doesn't mean you have to replace the roof altogether as steel sections can be added to increase the strength enough to creat a tie style roof, but that's best for a structural engineer to draw one up for you. Don't ask an architect to do it, i've never met one who understands what to do in real life workings in over 20 years of the building trade![/u] |

The trusses will have a calculated load and cannot technically be messed with. you'd need a structural engineer to make the proper calcs.
You have two gable ends, so steel purlins would be an option. The pitch is steep, so wind loading will be a big factor. V8 90...WIP |

If your going to that trouble, take roof off, add a floor and some more blocks so you have an upstairs before you put the roof back on.
Dig the floor out! Cheers James 110 2010 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

I very much doubt I'll get planning permission to extend upwards. The house is in a group of 5 in the middle of nowhere. Nearest village is just over a mile and the nearest town is 3 miles away. 110 D250 SE HT 110 USW SOLD RRE HSE Dynamic Gone, wife killed it VOLVO XC60 R Dynamic with some toys Polaris RZR 900XP SOLD |
