Harsh Vibration
Hi everyone before I’m shot down, I did search but only found one thread that seemed to describe my problem, but there was no conclusion!

Could a failing clutch / release bearing cause a harsh vibration through the vehicle?

The best way to describe it is - Imagine the feeling like you’ve shifted up to the wrong gear and really laboured the engine (ie like going to select 3rd but selected 5th instead)

I’ve got the classic signs my clutch is failing (very noisy release bearing at idle and clatter when switching off) and now this vibration has appeared which seems to be only when cold (ie first few miles of the day) and at low speed / gears. At first I thought it was Exhaust, but it’s all secure on inspection.

If not clutch, what else could it be?

Thanks in advance

Vague as it sounds, check you don’t have and grit and stones in your tyre treads. If so remove it all.
If no change, or nonevpresent check prop UJ’s as well. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

That's Steve, I will check but it is a complety different feeling to something in the tyres.

Can the UJs be properly checked in situ? My 90 Project : http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic52774.html

A basic check yes, but you can't always fully check them.

Sometimes it's something you least expect that's the culprit, and often the most simple or cheap to fix.

Given that you know it's an issue, I'd sort out the clutch first. You may be chasing a second problem that doesn't exist. Darren

Check your rear tyres, if every second tread block on the inner side of the tyre has worn lower, it causes a vibration at low speed, more noticeable with cold tyres. Our local dealer replaced the rear diff twice under warranty and serviced the prop before checking the tyres. 2 new tyres and vibration has gone. My tyre dealer suggested rotation every 10,000 km to even out the wear.
