I have one of the most irritating problems that you can get....... my TD5 has an intermittent starting problem. Sometimes when you turn the key all you get when you turn to the start position is a solonoid click at the starter motor, sometimes it will get as far as engaging the starter and start to turn the engine over then stop.
Sometimes you can go days with no sign of trouble and you think it's fixed, then like today, it can take you over a dozen attempts to get it going(you just make sure you don't stall when out and about ![]() I've checked and double checked the battery terminals, I have no concerns over the battery condition. Taken off and cleaned the terminals on the starter motor. Double checked the earth strap near to the starter and put another one on. Fiddled, faffed and swopped the relays behind the fuse board, no problems there. I'm begining to suspect the ignition switch now, when it's in it's won't play mode, no matter how you twist, lean, push and pull on the key it seems to make no difference. But, I do get the impression that holding the key in a certain fashion does make a difference. The question I'm getting round to is that if I go and replace the ignition switch am I right in assuming that I'll interfere with the alarm/immobiliser and, apart from having a different key to the doors cause me a bigger expense. Could I take the "start" wire off the back of the switch, extend the wiring to a new push switch and thus keep the alarm/immobiliser intact as is? This way, the key is still needed to start the motor but the function of actually turning the key to the start position would be taken over by a seperate button which may well be hidden in plain sight. |

when did this start happening ?
did your truck get wet ? have you played/modified any of the electrics ? Is it dry under the passenger seat ? (IE is the electrics / boxes all dry) have you had any problems with the immobiliser ? can you use a nanocom - ie is there any error codes for the immobiliser ? Before buying stuff, check the above ![]() |

I wonder if TD5 Defenders still use the spider unit as part of the immobiliser, as per the 300tdi Discoverys? The reason I ask is you're describing the exact same fault I had on my old Discovery, which turned out to be this unit. I overcame it by replacing it with a bypass that LR produced because so many went wrong.
Of course, if Defenders don't use this unit then that's irrelevant ![]() 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought!" - Princess Leia |

I had exactly same thing with my puma and it was the immobiliser.
Soon as it happened I locked/unlocked using the remote and it started right away. Pom |

Cheers for all the suggestions, I still might do my seperate starter switch though as a security measure against a casual theft, might just confuse a scroate ![]() |

Are you sure it is not your fuel pressure regulator leaking? Another common thing, is the FPR leaks diesel on the starter, then it fails?.. Worth a look. Andy |

Went down the route of replacing the solonoid bits as per Landy Andy's suggestion. Went on fleabay yesterday morning about 8am and bought one, was on the doormat this morning. So that spurred me on and I've fitted the bits. Simple job to do, the biggest pain is the mounting nut on the "hidden" side of the starter motor, especially when you do find out it's a different size spanner needed than the other fixings. Took me longer to get it off than do the business. Still hour and a half later, soaked(why does it allways rain when the spanners come out? Bloody sunshine now and before
![]() All back together and it works, well it worked all day yesterday as well but it took me 5mins to start it at one point this morning. Tried it repeatedly for five minutes or so and it only clicked once, just going to see what happens over the next few days. The copper contacts were pretty pitted and eroded in parts, I have got some pictures if anybody's interested so for the sake of 12 with postage it's worth a try. |
