Puma 2.4 slow start in morning.
Hi
My puma 2.4 is a bit sluggish to start first thing in the morning. Need to turn it over a few times to start it after giving it the normal amount of heat.
The glow plugs are all ok.
Battery is good.
It’s ok for the rest of the day but the start of the day is not the best.
Fuel problem?

Poor earthing could also show these symptoms. Check the earth connection on the gearbox and chassis.

Is it on cold mornings or every morning? The cold weather thickens the oils, and even with a good battery its performance is much less after a cold night, so the first start can labour a bit.

We had issues like this before the starter motor gave up the ghost .... slow cranking when cold but fine after. Earths and battery all checked and in good order. ....... Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html

I had similar symptoms and tried all the other easier options like battery and earthing but yup, it was the starter dying and one night it failed to start.
I suggest you change it now, you won't believe how fast a new one spins over coz you are so used to the old one.
Pig of a job tho. Lots of skinned knuckles.

Hi .. another vote for the starter.

My 110 2.4 was getting slower and slower to start in the mornings. It eventually let me down before Christmas. The starter stopped working altogether.

I changed the starter for a new Bosch one (don’t bother going cheap) and starting has been pretty much instant since. I changed it myself which wasn’t the easiest and involved a lot of swearing. 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

Another vote for starter, I had similar symptoms, post on here software. New starter, 30 mind to fit, cured. Read a lot of parts saying how difficult it can be to change, but in end it was all scarmongery from my experience, post on here linked to other saying how. Cheers

Starters clog up with clutch dust but just change it and get the old one cleaned and checked over for next time.

What is it with defenders.
I seem to forgive it every time I have to spend some money on it!
I go nuts forking out for repairs on my wife’s car but the defender just gets away with it every time!

Hi, I've been having the same issue and been raking through the whole internet to find out why! My mechanic also couldn't find the issue. Battery was fine, glow plug was fine.. Then I came across this YouTube video that I turn on the high beam before start.. So far it has worked!

Here is the video, tip number 7..

Google translate says -"I'll make this attempt .. try!"
I think it sounds better in Italian Laughing Just because you're offended doesn't mean you're right.
