Hehe i know the feeling, after i sold the other Landies a few years ago i kept waving at others when in my works van...strange looks a plenty!

What pulled on the heart strings more was seeing my old landy nigh on abandoned outside a mechanics garage, i very nearly bought her back as a project and getting her back to a good example, but alas, i was dealing with another person who thinks the badge is worth a fortune, so i walked away... Big Cry

Onwards and upwards and i know i'm probably not going to sleep much tonight Wink

Taken her for test drive, all good so far. Was smokey on start up, blue/black, any thoughts? Run her upto temp and no sign of it

Mine has always smoked on startup, especially more when it's cold.

If it's excessive it could be linked to poorly sealing copper washers on the injectors - common issue and there's loads of info on it here. The washers are cheap enough if you can do it yourself. Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon
Then: 2004 2.5 TD5 90 Hard Top (X-Tech Edition)

Arrived home after a 240 mile trip back ( left at silly oclock this morning in the part ex truck! ) and simply put...

Wow.

From a 200tdi and TD5 point of view as my last 2 Defenders, this is way beyond them on the motorway.

Sat all the way home at about 80mph with a little in reserve when it was needed, but at 90 she wasn't really that comfortable, not that i'd want to be sat at those speeds in a 2 ton brick for long, but interesting to know she was happy to do it. At 50 in 6th, she'll pull no problems upto the top end at a respectable pace.

Around the lower end she is clunky and the gears take abit of getting used to. I drive a 6 speed van for my work everyday so i'm used to large vehicles and low output ( 95bhp ) with plenty of gear changing, but the length of the gearstick is a game changer against a van, however it's not the be all and end all, i've just got to get used to it all again.

My only gripe so far is the power loss after hitting 5th and 6th..it almost feels like a clutch slip as in you release the clutch and for a second or 2 no power is given to the wheels..it happens slightly in 5th and a little more in 6th. Coming off a slip road at 60-70 into 6th and suddenly the speed is not going anywhere for a few seconds is abit alarming to start with!

She's spent her life on the motorways really which shows in the nice clean underside. I honestly havn't seen a cleaner defender underneath than this one, spotless! She's had a fair few bits replaced and i'll start another thread on that in the correct section once i get some more pics.

Plenty of smiles and although i've got back ache from the different driving position, I'm thoroughly happy!

One word... Remap! Highly recommend for much smoother power delivery and pulls like a train in every gear. James

Looking good.

Even got the traditional crooked wiper Laughing

Pretty standard worn wiper boxes and/or rack - you'll earn your 'took the dash out twice to fix the wipers once' badge in due course Mr. Green

But yeah - looks niiiice, get that remap quick smart. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

They'll happily do 90 all day long, but they are limited to 90mph (ish) as standard if it's getting uncomfortable then it's likely just something out of balance or alignment, wheel balance for example.

The lack of power in 5th and 6th is the engine's map, basically it's a 140bhp Transit engine, but detuned in the map to 120bhp to make it safer for the 'average' commercial vehicle driver. If they'd left it at the standard Ford 140bhp then I would expect most fleet drivers would be destroying clutches on a weekly basis and wrapping them around trees every other week.

They do go better after decent run, don't fall for the "it's all been motorway miles" rubbish, they only really get scabby underneath at that age if they've been used extensively off road or on a farm (animal urine eats into everything. My 2010 one looked like new underneath, it even still had the paper labels on the chassis. Had been used by an accountant as his family car. If it's only done motorway work, the front end and windscreen will be peppered up like someones attacked it with a shotgun.
