New engine 2.4 tdci +?
After my engine death rattle at 110k miles I'm having a new stripped engine fitted. A new clutch and silicone coolant and turbo hoses will also be fitted along with an OEM turbo and starter motor.
Simple question - while the work is being done is there anything else that I should have replaced? The egr is disabled via a BAS 160 bhp tune

yes why don't you consider swapping the bit between the bonnet and the tarmac with an LS3 Mr. Green

....or just a larger intercooler?

In an ideal world the V8 would be the way to go
But SWMBO might notice the lovely exhaust note and the hole on the bank account Big Cry

Ian - it appears that the timing chain took a tooth out of the crank sprocket - valve and no1 piston met with inevitable consequences. This on a carefully serviced engine at 110k miles. My 300tdi did 380k and still going strong. Have considered a 300tdi retrofit Mad

The TDCI chains do stretch a fair bit over time,

The company next to us insisted all the chains on their Transit fleet were replaced a 130,000,
I’ve done a few now, and sprocket wear can be supprising! Shocked
Especially on the pump for some reason?

I’m going to do mine soon, just for piece of mind. Thumbs Up 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Interesting to read that. Did the sprocket-wear vary a lot at engines with (more or less) same milage?

Caterham - just ordered an intercooler and silicon hoses from Pete Bell.
Will I now be a hypermiler?

There isn’t any rhyme or reason to the wear,
Out of the 7 I’ve done, 2 had quite badly worn pump sprockets,
Compared to the other 5?

The cam chain kits come with cam sprockets, crank sprocket, and pump sprocket,
All plastic guides, crank seal, and tensioner.

I ended up replacing the timing covers too, as they don’t come off too well without damage.

Not cheap, but well worth doing on a high miler. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Is there any sign for a streching chain? (Rattling sound, fault codes...)
I assume timing can't be checked without removing all covers etc?

Maybe related to poor consistency of heat treatment on the sprockets perhaps?

Interesting its not a uniform failure.

Oil pump could be worse just down to the fact that its a different manufacturer and thus slightly different manufacturing procedures perhaps?

Was there any symptoms given ahead of the smash, rattling chain or fairly quiet?

Cheers
Andy

Unfortunately there were no additional rattles or other warning sounds. In fact the vehicle had been serviced in December a few hundred miles before the chain jumped the sprocket. My much trusted independent knew that I had planned a 4000 mile trip during Jan and Feb and was on the alert for any potential problem however minor. Just got back from Spain (Defender drivers don't wave back when waved at by an X-Trail driver! Whistle ) collecting Defender next week and will post some pics of the damage.
