First place to investigate is the selectors, take the gaiter off the gear lever and then undo the bolts holding the "turret" to the top of the gearbox check that the gear lever is free to move normally. You can see the selector forks, check that each one is working properly.

cheers fella , i`ve taken the top off and it looks ok to me , i have sat n wiggled , found reverse , its not in its normal place and neutral is now up the top , like between 1st n 3rd position , how bizzarre , also noticed , it revs up when lifting my foot off the clutch , never done that before , hmmmmmmm

When it happened to me (300tdi same 380 box) one of the selector forks was loose on its rod tightened it up and all OK. Seems that yours is not as simple as that!

Make sure the yoke is not loose on the end of the selector shaft - there’s a grub screw which holds it in place and should be Locktited. If that’s okay then the problem may lie further into the box as above.

all epox`d in , will order some gaskets , she`ll now have new oil too, did a dry run , so to speak , once i had got the mechanism lined up , a git , so gut some metal out , and bobs ya uncle , gears again , yessssssssss .
