2002 Defender 90 Td5 XS CSW Java Black
Saxton 4x4
We purchased a 2015 Defender Landmark from Saxton 4x4 for well over £40k and 20ish thousand miles on the clock.

It was described as immaculate in writing and via a rather rough phone video.

When the vehicle arrived it had the following defects:

1. Windscreen frame corroded
2. Windscreen blocks corroded
3. Gutter under windscreen flaking paint
4. Drivers side b-pillar very bad rust to lower section
5. Door hinges sprayed with black spray paint to cover rusty bolts which went all over the doors.
6. Rear cross member has been sprayed but paint fell off when using a hose, not a high pressure hose
7. Service light was on

This was purchased for a friend and I was doing some tweaks to it or him before he took delivery, hence why it came to me first. I made the video below to show the defects and explained that a lot of these defects are normal on a Defender but one should expect that they should be rectified before delivery and not deliberately covered up.

I spoke with the salesman, Alex Evertitt, and after quite a lot of tooing and froing they agreed to pay for the paint on the windscreen surround and and removal oof the paint from the hinges and overspray of the doors. The total of the works came in at £490 inc vat and they confirmed in writing.

I paid my bodyshop and my friend got his car and was happy!

However Saxton are refusing to settle the invoice and the salesman is ignoring all calls and emails, he even hung up on me when I called from a different number.

In short, the car was purchased in good faith as being immaculate and was far from it when it arrived. Saxton don't seem to care once the money is in their bank and the way in which they have deliberately ignored us and lied to since has been nothing short of shocking.

I am sure most of the cars they sell are in good condition and they just dont get Defenders and their known weak points but still that is no excuse.

I am at a loss of what to do next but will keep pestering them......its not the money its the principal.

Reputation is a valuable commodity and they clearly don't value theirs or their promises.

For £490 plus VAT it looks like they think it's too little to be worth pursuing, and they'll just get away with it. JB

Try trading standards first, then small claims court as it is low cost and designed for such purposes.

Given what’s happened I would double check condition of engine, transmission etc to see if its commensurate with the mileage reading. Plus servicing history as oil service light was on.Also connect a code reader to see what’s stored as DTCs.
To be honest having spent £40k I would as a precaution change engine oil and filter, air filter, fuel filter. Transmission oil, transfer box oil, front and rear diff oil (fit magnetic plugs in diffs, perhaps in transmission drain) Check and top up swivels with grease and grease props. Then check brake pad wear, brake , clutch and power steering fluids and coolant.

As diy on a drive that lot would take about four hours including a couple of tea breaks while waiting for fluids to drain and about £200 for Lr filters, quality oils from opie etc and perhaps a set of front or rear pads. So worth while piece of mind and a good starting point from which to base regular servicing.

Straight to small claims court, very cheap and so easy. Probably cost them more to defend it. If they get arsey pay the extra (it's surprisingly cheap) to appointment high court sheriff's to collect the debt or seize goods

Sorry bud and I hope you get it sorted, I know this does not help but they have a terrible reputation, they will hold out I had issues over 10 years ago, I would be very wary of them, I would not trust them or their products.

Don’t you worry. The entire vehicle has been fully serviced including all fluids. I also replaced the Britpart oil filter they had used as it just doesn’t sit right in a vehicle like this.
