Fuel: white smoke
My defender is over fueling (not using any water/oil), it's done 170K miles so it's probably due a new fuel pump but is there anything else it could be like worn injectors?

Also any recommendations on which fuel pump to buy? 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

Have you tried isolating each injector to see if it's a particular injector causing the problem? Or possibly water in your diesel? Matt.

I recently put a new fuel tank in and I've put a couple of tanks of fuel through it so im pretty sure it's not water in the fuel.

How would I isolate which injector is causing issues if it is them? 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

With the engine running, loosen the union on each injector, one-by-one and see if the smoke stops Matt.

It's worth a shot, will a knackered injector cause mpg to drop? 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

Well white smoke, if it's not water in the system, is usually very excessive overfuelling. Black smoke is overfuelling but the fuel still partially ignites whereas white usually indicated a significant excess. So yes, I would guess that if the white smoke is unburnt fuel from a faulty injector you would have a lot lower mpg?

All kind of guesswork but it makes sense in my mind Confused Hope this helps! Thumbs Up Matt.

Yeah I agree, so theoretically when the union is loosened it should be obvious I hope!

Will let you know how I get on, thanks for the advice 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

Hi Kit. White smoke can also be oil bypassing the bearing seal on the exhaust side of the turbo. Can cause quite the amount of white smoke with not a great drop in oil level. Would be worth checking the play in your turbos impeller, especially axial in/out play. Should be negligible.

Timing belt was done recently (2 months ago) do you think it was setup wrong?

It's at worst on start up and incrementally gets better until the engine has fully warmed up

I'll check the turbo too Thumbs Up 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

Yeh it will be one injector, do the slacken illiminator test, to find it, , i"v had this , lots of white smoke on start up. clears when engine is hot,, usually the idle is erratic when cold,, theres full sets of recon injectors on ebay, £190,

Sure check it, but it now sounds like this is not the cause. Sounds like a timing or fuel pump issue.

kit, id change the glow plugs in case that's causing problems, sometimes one can go down causing some white smoke at start up. My Dturbo had this problem. before you go about injectors as mentioned, and also change where you fill up in case its a bad batch of diesel Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
