If it's any consolation, mine does exactly the same!
Some days it's rattly, some days it's quiet, no obvious cause.

I asked a garage to change the VCV about a year ago, and although they charged me for it I'm not convinced they did anything. The same garage did the sump drain plug up so tight that I had to use an impact wrench to take it out again.

 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Stornoway Grey
on a cold morning my 2010 2.4 70k miles gives a puff of smoke, but no lazy cranking, starts straight up, no rough idle either.

However, if i run the webasto block heater first for 15mins, no puff of smoke Cheers
