Bulkhead vent flaps
Mine are stuck down, painted over and do not work.

It gets rather hot in the defender when sunny, how useful is it to have the air vents working.

Thinking about stripping and cleaning.

Open flaps in summer is great ! well worth the effort . just make sure they are not hiding a bodged bulkhead

Hi they definitely make a difference ,hopefully they were just sealed up because they were letting water in if that's the case give the levers a good spray of wd40 over a couple of days and run a Stanley blade around the vents and slowly open them and close them a little at a time don't try to open them fully the first push of the levers as if they've seized through not being used they may break, mine weren't stuck/sealed down but they were very seized up through lack of use and this did the trick, when you do release them make sure you order genuine vent seals as the pattern ones are rubbish, good luck you won't regret doing this Thumbs Up Paul Tash n Barney

Great stuff. Started the job, plenty of releasing agent. I intend to renew the split pins type things also however one has just sheared looks a simple but a Censored of a job to get it out.

Well ordered new OEM seals and stainless hinges off flea bay.

Got the drivers side working, will just have to figure a way of removing the hing pin.

Quite excited, will be able to ventilate rather than boil 👍

Is it possible to fit the foam seals without undoing the bracket, I will have the hing pins released. Also I will have to retouch the paintwork. Would you fit the foam seal and paint or paint first.

With the hinge pins off you can undo the bracket fixings easily enough, bit of a fiddle but doable kneeling on the bonnet.

Fix the paint, then stick the foam seals on the flaps. Then refit and close tightly for a day or two before first use. Ensure they sit flat-ish all round, so the foam is making contact with the metal lip on the bulkhead.
