Check the big fuse links in the fuse box in the seat box under the driver's seat.
Sounds like part of the car isn't getting power. ![]() ![]() |

Checking your battery earth is 100% is always a good place to start with electrical problems.
The fact that you have a light on your dashboard that is lit with the keys removed could be a diode board fault on your alternator which will drain the battery all the time I had similar issues on My BMW motorcycle years ago and it was a diode failure. |

As mentioned first look at earths, check battery clamps are tight.
And also Earth straps to chassis, in particular the earth strap on the transerfer box that it's clean, and tightened. Also check underseat Relays are fully home and secure. _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___ ___\⭐️Lone|Star|State/___ ____\We|Will|Win/___ ____/🇬🇧🇺🇸\____ _//*⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰*\\_ |

Yeah... i'd seen that in some of the other posts i read, but i couldn't tie up the symptoms. That didn't stop me buying a new one though

having spent some time looking at the circuit, i've come to the same conclusion. Having pulled the the instrument cluster up and out of the way, i tried to start the car just one more time. This time i got all the correct lights and the car started OK. I can only assume that with me messing around it the key switch area that i have disturbed the 'fault' To me, the only thing i can do now is change the plastic switch on the end of the key barrel. Here is a picture:- ![]() Click image to enlarge The manual says to remove the one screw. I have pulled the one screw out shown ringed in red in the pic, but i still can't get the actual switch off the barrel. The replacement switch has TWO screw holes (one each side) and i suspect that there are two fitted to the original as fitted. How the hell do i get to it...? OR... do i simply need to pull harder on the original? Suggestions would be appreciated... At least i got the car off the lawn so the wife is a lot happier.. Well... it took a while, but i'm now a bit closer to finding the fault. The instrument cluster has a multipin plug on the rear, and it is this that has an intermittent connection.
It's not clear to me if it is the plug, or the socket on the cluster, but this plug has some sort of connection to the immobiliser and it is the imobiliser that is stopping the car from starting (and on occasion killing the engine while in motion) It's strange how one small(ish) job expands in to other jobs.. a pool of fuel on the floor had me changing the fuel filter, it has never been changed from new. ![]() So, filter changed and now the fuel rail needs bleeding DOH... I've fitted the EGR blank, and found that the heater inlet manifold was full of water... Tomorrow is another day... ![]() 2007 Puma Defender 2005 Volvo S60 T5 (for Sundays) 1998 MGF |

Don't you just love defenders
![]() At least you seem to be traveling the road to repair. Once all sorted might be worth checking what service items have or have not been done as if the fuel filter has not been changed!! Good luck with it all and keep us posted. |

How often should it be changed then???
I've done the engine oil & filter around every 12 to 14k miles. Air filter has been done, brakes as and when required. Andy 2007 Puma Defender 2005 Volvo S60 T5 (for Sundays) 1998 MGF |

I do my fuel filter and service every 12k (once a year).
Did I misread your post as it sounded like you suggested the fuel filter had not been changed since new ie 11 years?? |

I think the standard is 12k or two years which ever comes sooner. For me on low miles normally two years _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___

Ah... thanks for that... i got the vehicle in 2009 with just 7k on it, i've had it since then, but never changed it, oopps.
It's now on my list, so thanks!. Andy 2007 Puma Defender 2005 Volvo S60 T5 (for Sundays) 1998 MGF |
