Did I misread your post as it sounded like you suggested the fuel filter had not been changed since new ie 11 years??

nope, i've not changed it.. it might have been changed when i bought it from the local dealer, but i bet not knowing them...

So, yes, it might have been 11 years, or 35k miles. It left a nice sticky mess on the road though... Sad

As a P.S. to that statement, i got the landrover in 2009, it had 7,000 miles on it at that point. The local Landrover dealer is not my favorite choice of garages to deal with, i had a bad experiences with a 3 year old S type jaguar, they are jaguar/landrover that left a bitter taste...

Also, I've had dealings with them about my landrover pulling to the left and within weeks of getting it, it was back in with them to be sorted out. They couldn't (or wouldn't) fix it... but i'd registered my defender with landrover themselves and following its visit to the garage, i got an email from HQ(?) asking for my views on the local dealer... i'm afraid that i vented considerably in my reply. But within hours of hitting the send button i got a call from the dealer asking me to book the car back. i did so, and although it took 3 days, i got it back all fixed.

So... No, i suspect it was never changed before i got it, and as i'd not even realised that it should be changed, i hadn't changed it either.. Andy

So..

My thanks to everyone that has had some input on this thread...

Just to recap, originally i was stuck with a defender that would (on occasion) not start, it would turn over for a second or so, then stop. repetitive tries found that it didn't even try.

The problem that i had with my landrover defender (2007) is that the multipin plug that is fitted to the rear of the instrument cluster has a suspect pin connection (i say suspect as i didn't actually see anything) BUT, by moving or pulling on this plug had the ignition lights flicker on & off, also the green LED window for the mile meter.

With the plug in its faulty state, there would be no ignition lights prior to trying to start.

This faulty state i believe the imobiliser was triggered, and thus it would fail to start.

I have had the plug apart, cleaned what i can, then rebuilt it and refitted it. I am now driving it around with the cowling still off, just in case..!

It is my intention to try and get the 'passive' parts of the imobiliser turned off (just like South African defenders) I don't need this sort of hassle from a car. So long as the door can be locked, that will do me.. (i just hope i can sort that out with my Hawkeye device) Andy
