Puma On Hub Dyno
Fitst id like to give a big thanks to "Willy eckerslike" for the loan of his Defender 90 for 2 weeks for a bit of project work while he was in the north sea somewhere working, and allowing me to put it on the dyno.

Ill post a couple of pictures and let them tell the storey, i have only a couple of things to say/add

Please note the torque is smooth from low to peak including the 2500rpm area Smile, and please also note the peak power in rpm because as ive always said defenders drive in peak power if you change gear arround 3200rpm their is no gain from over reving them.

This is a standard car, NO modifications at all execpt the remap.

Dotted lines = STD, Solid lines = Tuned. Power is Wheel power NOT flywheel power as LR figures state

What sort of power loss/conversion factor would be added to this to get flywheel power (just out of curiosity), Pete? 20%?

Im not sure is the honest answer. LR quote 122bhp at the flywheel std.

The STD wheel power is on the graph so a comparison gain is viewable to the tuned shown.

4x4 systems kill way more than 20% one of the biggest power drains is the transfer box, my Bowler on the rolling road was 273Bhp at the wheels and when it was on the overrun stage which is how they then calc the flywheel figure was taking 42Bhp just to turn every thing round but that was on off road tyres they dont help even more so on the rollers as eight points of contact not 4 If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

This hub dyno does not do a run down which may be why they could not calculate the Flywheel figures for me.

They look cool bits of kit are they bolted down or counterweghted ??? either that or they must have some massive bearings in them If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

They are big heavy lumps with cables and 2x massive 1.5" fluid hoses that go inside the unit which is used for the "Load Up" of each dyno pack seperatly.

The shaft that bolts to the cars hub is about 3" diamiter and slides a good way inside the dyno pack to make connection.

They are quite interesting to watch as you can see each wheel picking up speed when you first set offas the diffs start there work.

Nice kit, we can all see now why remapping properly needs such a heavy investment. Thanks for sharing.

My guess by the chart is in standard trim willys defender has 108 ish at the hubs so 8.5 ish % loss ?

and noworries is 315bhp ish total and 273 ish to the wheels (big tyres) so 13 ish % loss ?

does this sound right.

Hello Pete

Not sure I understand the graph. What is the bottom line on the graph, are these figures engine RPM?
I thought on the standard defender that maximum torque would be around 1800 - 2000 RPM, but the graph does not show this.

can you get it on a 4 wheel dyno? would show run down and give a acurate " at the wheels" figure.

As far as im aware from my semi limited knowlage of dyno internals and mechanics, run down is only done on an inertia dynos, where as a loaded/braked dyno can calculate the loadup it added on the power run and take it away from the power run figure to give the wheel power.

Though i do agree dyno figures are a mine field and do change from dyno to dyno etc etc.

Ultimatly i suppose you cant drive a piece of paper so the figure is irrelevent in the real world aslong as the car delivers feelable power.
