Intercooler & radiator... how to? + other topical topics
Giddy all,

So I have a slow leak on the radiator that's taken an age to find on my 2.4l Puma (with AC), I can't be arsed with half way measures so am buying a new one and figured that since I'm in the region I'll also install a BAS hi-flow intercooler (I have a BAS remap already Mr. Green ) - and replace most of the pulleys and tensioner on the accessory belt as again, it's in the region and they are slowly acting up and getting noisy. In the past I have:

- Done a coolant drain and refill previously so know how to fill it up again.
- Changed the accessory belt... but without removing the viscous fan.

Aside from that I'd like to know how easy the rest is?

Drain coolant then simply undo hoses and fasteners and basic swap then follow WSM refill process as before?
Straight swap with intercooler?
Fan off (I can see how to build the required tool and the mechanic who found the radiator leak did it just yesterday so at least I know it's not seized..) - then belt off and straight swap of brackets/pulleys and tensioner?

How to work around the AC without damaging it?

Also, I can see the value in having robust, smooth and non-expanding hoses for the air, but are the BAS silicone hoses really worth it?

The original Land Rover hoses are rubbish and mine pinged off or wore through. Silicone hoses are an absolute pig to fit, but massive improvement for peace of mind, if nothing else.
No more delving into the engine bay on the side of the motorway trying to refit slipped hoses.

Dragging this oldie back up again, is there a guide anywhere to fitting the BAS intercooler and silicone hoses please?

It looks like a five minute job to me (after you've spent at least four hours removing half the front of the van...) but, lacking my six year old Victorian urchin to crawl in and do it, any advice would be much appreciated.

It’s anything but a 5 minute job! 😄
I don’t know if rhd vehicles are different but on my lhd Defender it turned out I didn’t need to bleed the cooling system and remove the fan for the elbow part. We could swap it from the side. You might want to check that before you start.

Thanks, the five minutes was definitely a joke (as I'm sure you realise).

I'm hoping I don't need to remove any of the cooling system to do this.

Joe,

I did this recently (actually my brother did it whilst I watched) no need to remove the cooling system, but space is tight to get the hoses back on.

Probably took us about 2 hours without a manual but he does do body repair work for a living, so probably gave him some advantage. Biggest hassle was releasing the captive bolts from the inner wings to free the mounting frame 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone
2002 - Black Discovery II - Gone
2014 - Montalcino Red 110 XS SW
