Which MIG to buy??
I am thinking of getting a mig welder, 170-200 amps must be single phase and I don't really want a inverter type, I'm wondering if anyone has experience of Oxford Migmaker /TecArc and the SWP Turbo 170. I'm not going to be rewelding the Forth bridge, just some light fabrication. In the past I have had a 415v Migatronic which I couldn't fault, an ESAB which was good, and an Eland-they went out of business!!, but now it must be single phase Bow down 1954 series 1-sold

Well i think the MIG-29 is the latest, but you can probably pick up old MIG-21's from various eastern european countries quite cheaply. It just depends on what sort of air to air combat you need to get in to.

On a serious note, i've got one of the 150amp Clarke Units from machine mart. Maybe they wouldn't last long doing industrial welding on a daily basis but mines lasted me about 12 years of DIY so far, and it's still in perfect nick. Parts and accessories are easy to get for them. They do bigger ones if that's what you need.

Ditto to the value of the Clarke ones. I have an old 151TE which must be 10yr old now and still perfect. Out of its depth at 6mm plate and above but great for general fabrication using upto .8mm wire.

I have recently upgraded to the more industrial swan neck/tip and stroud and they are much better, last longer and replacements are cheaper.

Would also recommend RTech, I have one of their plasma cutters and it is superb quality, I will replace my Clarke unit with one of theirs when it has worn out.

Alternatively pick up a second hand Murex/Kempi unit if you prefer a more industrial type, might struggle to get a single phase model though.

What is the pro/con of an inverter type? It's been 20 years since I did a base course in Mig and Tig, and the inverter type is new to me.

My first and only welder so far has been a Clarke 130EN which can be run gas/gasless. Picked it up virtually new off fullfatrr.com shipped down from Edinburgh for ~£100 which included a load of spares, some additional reels of wire an autodarkening helmet and gloves.

Ironically a friend who helped me out with some welding on the 110 dumb irons (wasn't confident enough in my abilities then) had exactly the same albeit he picked his up for £20 for scrap and has upgraded / rebuilt it as he went but fundamentally the same unit. I had a play with his which was setup with gas and boy what a difference!

I've now converted mine over to use gas and it's a made a world of difference. You can do some substantial welds with a little prep such. My first 'project' was a hydraulic press which I did gasless, the welds weren't pretty. However they were strong, I have actually popped one of them but after I buckled a 6mm thick piece of box section in the frame...

I think I'll probably not get rid of it since it just takes a little practice but with the gas and 0.5mm wire I've done some pretty decent welds on 0.8mm thick stuff - before I was just blowing holes. I think if I was going to upgrade I'd just go the whole hog and go AC/DC TIG, Dad's just bought an R-Tech (their biggest single phase one) and is pleased with it. Ed
