Frustrating noise !!
I have a very frustrating noise that I cannot seem to locate. Initially we thought it was a wheel bearing as it sounds like a "wu wu wu wu..." That gets faster with speed. I took it to a garage and they had it in a rolling road and listened to each bearing in turn and thought all where ok. They thought it might be the tyres but although the are worn I can't see anything obvious. The all have worn on the inside edge.

The noise is more pronounced at 30 and 70mph and louder on a smoother road. I had all the diff and gearbox oil changed and nothing out of the ordinary there. There are no real vibrations on the steering wheel or gear stick so though this rules out drive shafts? The car has done 48k miles do not too high.

Any ideas?

if it was mot rolling road ( brake test rollers ) then I don't ever think you would tell if wheel bearing had gone

rollers to noisy and slow

better to jack up ( with axle stand of course ) and spin by hand and listen or maybe feel roughness

if they a harsh pattern ( mud ) the knobbles wear odd , look like there worn on a slope , sort of angled , seems to happen more on inside or outside edge of tyre

that can make a noise bit like wheel bearing humming sound

could try swapping wheels round corner to corner , so osf or nsr etc so rotation is changed , no good doing it if there directional

Does the noise get better turning 1 way and worse the other?

Thanks for the ideas. Swapping the tyres around didn't make that much difference but directional so could only do front to back. The noise doesn't seem to get any worse turning one way or the other.

Did you ever solve your frustrating noise problem? I have a noise on my 2013 90 that sounds pretty much identical to what you describe. Stealers have changed the transfer box under warranty - I think this was an expensive waste of time but they know what they are doing.... Anyway that didn't really make a difference and I have lost faith with them over this issue and a couple of others so I am reluctant to waste further time with them.

I think I will ask my indy to take a listen but if you can point me in the right direction, that may help!

Thanks for the suggestions - i am not sure that the tyres will be at fault. They are standard fit Contis - they look ok but i do have a spare set of Grabbers so I think i might try them to see what the effect is. The noise does sound more mechanical - bearings possibly - and is coming from the rear if that is of any relevance...

I too have the budgie behind the dash. He only chirps on cold days. I will be eliminating him soon but the other noises are currently more worrying to me (and my wallet)!

Hi Bobbles

It was the standard tyres on mine. Like yours the noise sounded like it was coming from the rear although I think the acoustics in the car make it hard to place. After replacing all four tyres with new ones the noise went away. If you look closely at your tires, especially on the inside edge you may see some of the tread sections higher then others (sawtooth wear). This was the culprit! It sounded just like a wheel baring noise.

As for the squeak behind the dash. I had that and sorted it by greasing the moving parts in the small box where the clutch slave sits. Just infront of the bulkhead under the bonnet at the top driver side of the engine bay.

Hope this helps. Cheers.

DavidBMB many thanks - and also to everyone else. Seems I may have a busy weekend then.... although I think that Mrs bobbles has other ideas. If I have chance I will swap some wheels and see if that changes things. I will report my findings. Think the budgie might have to wait a while but he is quiet at the moment.

I really wonder why I keep buying land-rovers. There is always something that needs fettling or some tiresome rattle or squeak. I kid myself that it's a bit of character sadly lacking in other vehicles and one day I may come to my senses but I love my defender and still smile to myself when I drive off in the morning.... Or maybe it's a grimace Razz
