Clayton,

Please keep them coming. I could follow this thread all day. The work you and other thatchers do is fascinating. I love the organic form of the contours all around the finished structure. Much more attractive than the modern roof design with the angular tiles and sharp lines.

Any shots of some of the adornments thatchers often add? I love the owls, hawks and other animals that you guys craft and stick on top of the ridge.

Many thanks for sharing your work. Bow down

Andy

Thank you Andy, yes i agree with you there on the subtle lines against the modern lines, i call them Lego lands Laughing

As for the adornments, it's up to the Thatcher if they would do this or mostly it's the customer that wants some type of " thing " on top of the ridge, as for me personally, i try not to put anything up there as the way most of them are made, they have 2 big metal spikes that go down vertically into the thatch, therefore that is a way for the water to get into the thatch and in due course it will leak or the reed will deteriorate much quicker Rolling Eyes

The job we finished a week ago, the owner made his own fox and we had to put it on, lets just say, it looked better on top off the ridge than on the ground Laughing 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.

So we just finished a small ridging job and i thought that this would be a good one to show you a bit more of what goes into the end result.

I am only concentrating on one side as the work on the other side is basically the same Thumbs Up

Before we start putting the ridging reed on we have to put a ridge roll on which we make on site as we can make the size of the roll we require .........

here it is on the ridge in place, this is to help give us a straight ish line to go with .......................

The roof has been dressed this side already, as we have seen before in this thread Wink and i have put the block line on, it's called a block line as it's raised up and will last much longer than what we call a flush ridge, nothing raised, all in line with the main coat .....

Then the top line goes on which we call the ridge lane Very Happy

The bundles of reed look like this when they come to us .....

Then we split them down to smaller bundles that look like this ...........

Then you get about 4 to 5 smaller bundles and then you tie them up in a bigger bundle ready to be carried up on to the roof to be used that look like this ......

While i am putting the smaller bundles of reed on my work mate is coming along behind me trimming it up and making it look right ................

Once both sides have been done and trimmed they will look like this with the roof brushed down to get all of the rubbish off ...................

Good stuff Clayton. I really enjoy this thread. So nice to see these traditional skills being kept alive in a world of new builds with concrete roofs.
