Yep, mine does that, and when the rattling stops there's a 'beeep'. Should I be worried? Neutral --

Mine the same. The NNcom still throws the EGR fault (stuck) but actually it works just fine. Puma 110" SW

My understanding is sticking is common. but its different from occasionally sticking and permentantly stuck! Mike

I think taking it apart and cleaning it with brake cleaner or simlar wont do any harm and is easy eniough to do tbh.

The EGR does a 5x clean/actuation cycle after the engine is turned off as part of the engine ecu running stratgies it opperates,i can only assume its to try and keep the components moving correctly and to try and stop sticking allong with possibily calibration of the position sensor.

As the EGR is actuated by the motor the feedback is given via a connecting rod that extends from the centre of one of the gears into the black plastic housing where it presses on a sensor inside which calculates EGR postion.

That said and even though this valve seems free ish in its actuation with only slight sticking on the motor its obviousley contaminated and is not actuating the gears either eniough or as said above as fast or as effectivly as it should due to the soot build up on the motor contacts and motor internals.

Below is a picture of a new valve at the side of the old valve and you can clearly see the difference in state of condition. I cant as yet see any internal difference with just the cover removed i will need to dig a little deeper into the internals to try and find any changes made.

However the outer casing is obviousley different from the new to the old units.

New unit, i see the casing here differes to the old unit where this pipe/lump is missing.

Here is another couple of pictures showing the external difference between the 2 different valve types.

Ok, so should I be worried about that beep after the EGR self-cleaning cycle? --

Maybe the beep it is not related to the EGR itself. Perhaps it is the fuel pump? Puma 110" SW

Great work Pete, once again - thanks for sharing your findings with us. If it ain't broke don't fix it!

I ve collected my 110 and it seems running better, but after 100 km it's like before changing the EGR... Crying or Very sad
I've checked the fault codes and I've had a bad surprise...

Quote:
NANOCOM - PUMAENG.APP - PUMA ENGINE fault file

1935 - 14
Brake switch sensor signal

circuit short to ground or open
---
0404 - 72
Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) control circuit
range/performance

actuator stuck open
---
0606 - 49
Engine control module (ECM) processor

internal
electronic failure
---
0100 - 64
Mass or volume air flow A circuit

signal plausibility failure

Could be the MAF that makes problems to the EGR?? Question Matteo

Had egr fault codes repeatedly last week and couldn't hear the cleaning rattle when switching off, so decided to remove egr and clean it - on a left hooker with air con its an absolute bitch!!!!!!!!!!!!

Over an hour to remove 4 bolts, arms cut to peices, blood everywhere, neighbours educated in new profanities etc. etc.

Stripped, cleaned - not too sooty, (over 90k now,) but condensation or supplying stealer over zealous steam cleaning had corroded terminals between cover and motor, cleaned up, tested and refitted, - worked for a day, no noise so hit it with a hammer stale - working for two days now................

Pete - BAS - have you got total egr removal sorted yet? If so can I book for Billing? Whistle

Recycling this old thread: my engine has stared making a strange noise, like YAK-YAK-YAK-YAK (3 or 4 YAKs) when i shut it down, while the performance in operation is flawless. Also when i change abruptly gear i seem to hear a faint YAK. Now the mechanic said it is the EGR motor that needs replacing and i found this thread very interesting. My question to you is, have you had this YAKing noise too? If so, how did you fix it? Blanking the EGR valve made any difference to you?

Thanks, kind regards

^^^^ It should make no noise at all whilst driving and only the 5 "chucka's" on EGR cleaning cycle on shut down. If it is making noises whilst idling or as you say. Mine did the same about 6 months before it finally went. First intermittent noises for a while then MIL up and then off for a bit then MIL on constantly and then finally no EGR noise at all as it was stuck closed.

Also worth bearing in mine that an EGR fault can create a MAF DTC to be flagged up when there is no MAF issue. New EGR and it's sorted. Hope your wallet is ready a new EGR is around 140 now Exc fitting.. Hence fitting myself. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧
