Yeah, so far off topic it's out of sight!
Story is that I'm involved in a massive clear out of the kind of  that accumulates over the years. Among all of this is a suitcase full of model railway stuff, some HO stuff, but mainly N gauge.
A lot of it I got from my grandfather, and he picked up a lot of that in the US in I suppose the mid-60's to mid-70's. I know I tinkered with it before I left home to go to University in the 80's and never really looked at it again. I think my Mum stuck it in a suitcase at some point, and it only came down from her loft about 2 or 3 years ago. Realistically not going to get used by me, so best to pass it on. But I think some of the stuff the old man bought might have been a bit special, so I don't want to just stick it on ebay without some research. Finally getting to the point - does anyone know of a good source of info, or friendly forum (along the lines of Def2!) where I could get some answers? Ta. I wouldn't worry about loosing out on e/bay, it is a sellers market not a bargain finders place, just put items up for auction for the longest period possible and if its valuable it will realise its value. I have sold lots of HO stuff on ebay and got good prices, just don't sell too much at once and have it finish on a Sunday evening when most people can be at home to bid DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I knew about the sunday evening thing on ebay, and I had wondered about maybe making the auction period a little longer to let more folk see it. Bearing in mind that I was only just 11 at the time, and on a week long holiday with my grandparents in downtown Manhattan, I can't remember the details, but I'm fairly sure he said one of the waggons was a limited edition of some sort - 1 of 50 or something like that. I was just hoping I could find somewhere that would pinpoint which one - if my memory is right, and if it's even still in the box. But I suppose the 'market' might figure that out on ebay anyway. The only train stuff I have is, is Hornby clockwork and triple rail electric trains (in tin) which I really must have a play with at some time.

RMWeb is about the best UK forum for model railways. Beware though, the rivet counters there make us look like amateurs.
Alternatively, there's a company called Rails of Sheffield that advertise as buying second hand collections, which might be worth an enquiry. That route almost certainly won't get you the most money but is relatively painless and could save you a huge amount of time trying to work out what you've got and what it might be worth to the right buyer. I remember growing up in Manchester in the 60s, just around the corner were the Beyer Peacock works, but there were model railway shops everywhere, selling the likes of Trix Twin, Hornby 00 (& O guage clockwork!), Lima, Marklin, Triang, Bassett Lowke, etc etc, don't think there's many about now,..only 1 or 2 in Melbourne specializing in Railways. Lots have other models, R.C. planes, boats, cars etc, but hardly any specializing in just model railways.

Very little places are about in uk now, We had a place called model zone which went bust about 5 years ago. I think most now have gone internet based.
I think my friend started to collect model trains some time ago, not sure if he still does. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it! |

There's a few specialised model railway shops around still, but I think that in just the same way as happened with good bookshops, the Internet has largely killed them off. You can now conduct a solid retail business without any retail premises.
The young folk of today will never really understand the deep joy of visiting a really good model shop and gazing in awe at all the things your pocket money wouldn't run to! |

Modelzone was a chain, i think they're part of WHS group and only trade online and in WHS stores. Absolutely - that made me smile! Way back when I was interested in this myself, there was an excellent model shop in Inverness. Small place, in an old victorian market. The building's still there, but no 'model shop' - tiny, but stuffed to the rafters with everything from model railways to airfix models, toy soldiers, RC aircraft and cars. They'd take stuff in and fix it. I didn't have that much 'pocket money', so I was sometimes too embarrassed to go in (it was so tiny, you really felt 'under the spotlight'!) but it was always worth a good look in the window. If this still existed, I'd have gone there for an answer instead of a LR forum(!) but thanks very much again. Some decent pointers there. I think also that gazing at all those things that you really, really wanted but couldn't afford taught you an important life lesson that all too often is overlooked by much of modern youth - namely that if you want something you have to work hard to get it. It taught a great lesson about value, worth, effort and reward.
Nowadays we seem to live in a very "instant" society where people demand things immediately without the pain of putting the effort in. The way that credit is so easy to get (in fact is almost impossible to avoid) doesn't help. |

It was Tamiya RC cars for me, trying to work out how many months of paper round and milk round (Sat morning, 2.30 start, oof!) I'd have to do to pay for one. In the end I saved up a bit and then put it towards a BMX, an Ammaco Mongoose no less. Happy days!

I used to be quite an avid model maker when i was younger. I still remember my firth three kits, an M551 Sheridan, an M3 Grant and a tiger tank in 1:72 scale i must have been about 6 or so. I remember going to modelzone every month or so armed with a £20 note to buy me kits. I haven't made one in years though. Yes. I have been for over forty years. At present, I am building a coal mine and coal loading stage. I have a railway in the loft however this one has been built in one of the spare bedrooms.
Here are a few pics to see how I am doing. I am into weathering and landscape detailing. Every one of those cobbles has been hand cast and all the building made to look as real as I can get them.
