These aren’t for everyone, but as there is a lot of discussion regards the airbox vs pipework etc I was looking up these things.
I found the Donaldson pre filters for Snorkels: https://devon4x4.com/expedition/snorkels-w...parts.html I know that some members on here have these, especially the pre cleaner. I have not seen the TopSpin Cylone before… I cannot see how it can be that beneficial unless the airline bore back to the airbox is essentially smooth and fairly direct allowing for the cyclone to remain undisturbed. I suppose on some vehicles that is easier, or by taking different routes, but the pre cleaners do have the cleaning capacity feature perhaps both do I haven’t looked at them in real depth. Whilst the cyclone might add a bit of forced induction, it also adds some restriction. Especially so if the bearing fails.. Do they sound different? I’d imagine useful on incredibly dusty environments such as farm sheds, mining locations etc, it would be useful. Anyone seen these TopSpin versions around, I haven’t that I’m aware of? _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___ ___\⭐️Lone|Star|State/___ ____\We|Will|Win/___ ____/🇬🇧🇺🇸\____ _//*⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰*\\_ |

These folk do a range of centrifugal air pre cleaners...in a fair range of sizes ..I'm running one atm on the top of a safari raised air intake to see how it does..

I suppose it depends on the application and what you are trying to achieve. If you want the optimal amount of airflow to the engine then you need a high flow airbox and high quality filter with the shortest, most direct hose in the largest possible bore. The other option is a bare filter in the engine bay but this would also need some heat shielding and also possibly some additional vents added, usually under headlights and/or in bonnet. Adding an RAI is a restriction, and a precleaner will add to that but if you are driving in conditions where your air filter is prematurely clogging then it may be the best option.
The performance gains can be noticeable with modifications to airflow but are not huge without changing lots of other stuff like mapping and turbo, intercooler etc. Likewise pre cleaners with RAI do protect the filter from clogging in extreme conditions. A compromise between performance and protection would be to use an uprated airbox and filter with the largest bore hose/RAI possible. The truth is, despite what we tell ourselves and our spouses, a Defender with original equipped engine and turbo will run just fine with a standard airbox and shonky OE pipework in pretty much all conditions as long as you keep an eye on the filter. However tinkering, fabricating and buying shiny new bits is a lot more fun. WARNING. This post may contain sarcasm. |

It's hard to say..I've fitted it as a trial and because I was going to and have now removed any water separator parts from the ducting and air box it's self..
with an upcoming trip to Morocco it will be staying there for the time being.. I've already mentioned in another thread that i expected a drop in air flow when I fitted it, but didn't notice any significant fall in the maf figure..surprising but that's what I noticed..maybe bit more fluctuation in the reading and no decrease.. It came with various plastic adaptors which I found useless so sorted the fitting to the top of the safari intake by making up my own bits.. Not pretty, but I'm happy it's secure👍🤣 ![]() Click image to enlarge |

We have a cheaper cyclone top fitted to our defenders which proved it use on our recent sahara and European trips. Its fixed to the top of one of the popular aftermarket snorkels an has a simple rubber grommet to make sure it fits properly
It collected a lot of sand and dust which would have ended up clogging the air filter - so it’s a win for me! No idea on the power differences or the such .. but it works for me ! We get 70+mph out of the vehicle when needed and returns over 450 miles out of a tank of fuel and it was a faction of the cost of the others https://www.lrchallenge4x4.co.uk/product/3...er-patrol/ ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html Elgar -TDCI(Puma) 110XS Dormobile - now sold Devon & Cornwall 4x4 Response - DC126 ![]() |

The amount of crud which collects in the Donaldson centrifugal precleaner on my Nak RAI together with the lack of crud in the filter element suggests that it works extremely well.
As I have said (many times) before, the difference between the Nak RAI and the Mantec RAI which it replaced is as night and day in terms of performance. With the Nak RAI the engine performs better than it did with the factory wing intake. |
