I did a pair of these a couple of months back for a friend, the fit and finish is pretty good.

However......

Buy yourself an air-powered rivet gun- my hands were aching for about a week after fitting a pair of them!

More interesting stuff this week
A long with all the rubbing down, treating and repainting, we have been at the axles this week.

Good knows how the back axle stayed on the car, one spring mount bracket and both rear trailing arm brackets were shot. New ones have been sourced and its all away being welded.

Also we have been at the front axle, my word there's a lot going on in there.

There was sort of grease in there, is that just contaminated axle oil or should these be greased up?

Everything is just caked in mud/dust/old leaking fluid, this is the diesel that came out of the tank at the beginning of the project, its now our parts wash.

Lastly this week, the gearbox got hung from our frame and got an under belly wash and the engine got a through clean as well.

Lots been going on with the rebuild, just fairly boring stuff to take pictures of and post here.

Had some great advice with the front axle referub from guys on here - much obliged as always.

Yesterday we took a drive up to Rotherham to collect this;

Seriously great guys at Richards Chassis's. the Customer Service is old school.

Great tour of the factory, Alistair is very passionate about what he and his team are doing there.

He stored my loaded trailer for me last night safe and sound in their workshop, this morning we went back, hitched it up and drove home.

Just got the back axle to fit new bearings and seals to and the RE-build will start Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy 2007 90 Puma - Love it - Best car I have ever owned.

Very nice. Fun times ahead Very Happy

On a 1989 vehicle your swivel houses would be oil filled, however as it aged as the balls rusted causing leaks I suspect previous owners swapped that for one-shot grease which was better at not leaking.

As I presume you will be replacing the rusty balls I would suggest you revert to oil.

Glad you bought that, took the temptation away from me - I used to drive past it 3-4 times a week & saw the for sale sign on it, was a bit sad really as it was a bit of a local landmark! I see they've got a Ranger now Shocked

Looks like you're having fun refurbishing it & doing a great job of giving us a running commentary on progress - keep it coming Thumbs Up

Soft top 90s look the 'mutts' - you need to put a V8 in it though Whistle

Ok well if I am not boring you all too much, I'll carry on...

Whilst the chassis currently resides in my garage pending its journey to be instated with all the other parts of Derek,

Work has been concentrated on getting the axels rolling again ready to be fitted to the afore mentioned chassis. we would have had them done and ready for its arrival, had we not had the issue with that seal on the front axel as mentioned above.

Anyhow - not the end of the world, front axel refurbished, treated, painted and ready;

Back axel refurbished and treated, by the end of the weekend it should be painted and rolling ready to be fitted next week;

Meanwhile I bought five boast alloys from GAV40 of this parish, I have had them stripped of their boots, and they are away being sand blasted ready for recoating.

I dropped off all the steal parts that I wanted galvanising;

Click image to enlarge

Couple of days later I picked up all this shinny stuff, very exciting, I like shinny!!!

Click image to enlarge

We then had to replace of all the bushes in the radius arms etc ready to get the new chassis rolling for the first time.

Click image to enlarge

Fortunately a friend has a 10 ton hydraulic press, but that would not budge them, the only way was to use the press to push out the rubber parts and cut the outer metal part of the bush in two places with a hack saw and then thump them out, long winded but it worked.

Click image to enlarge

So finally we had all the bits in the same place, all ready to be assembled to get us a rolling chassis.
1st we wheeled in the back axel;

Click image to enlarge

Next we wheeled in the trailer with the chassis;

Click image to enlarge

We then elevated the chassis

Click image to enlarge

Click image to enlarge

and lowered it down onto the awaiting rear axel

Click image to enlarge

We then got the front axel ready and fitted that, we now have our rolling chassis, HOORAY Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
