Had the same issue at my local supermarket:

Whilst waiting in line to pay, I couldn't help reading the sign for the first time and was amazed that the limit of 30cwt applied but more shocked by the 100 fine I could get.

I even spoke to the supermarket about it - they couldn't give a toss - saying it wasn't their car park, although the branding and refund options would at first glance make you think differently. I think the store would loose the majority of it's business if most car owners knew they were liable for a 100 fine every time they used the car park!

We still have beer served in pints. Do you want to change that as well?

Yes 30 cwt is 1.5 tons, however it is not 1,500 kg, it is not 1.5 tonnes, it is not 1.5 American short ton.

How many people below age of 30-40 would know what cwt. is?

Why ban medium/large sized cars from car parks?

Yes I am happy getting a pint of beer in the pub. Now are we talking flat beer/little head or a beer with a good head?

Milk still comes in pints if it's in a glass bottle. Explain that!

Not just milk in glass bottles.

Milk in plastic bottles comes in 568ml/1 pint containers.

Must admit a 1 litre stein of beer is a bit heavy/clumsy to drink from. Razz

I'm 29 and one of the few that knows what a cwt is, 20cwt to the ton (not tonne) but that is because my family had a builders merchant and we still used cwt because the older builders preferred it!

I know I'm old school as I still can't guage weights in metric, I find myself weighing up objects in lbs and cwt and converting it over to kilos, length measurement is the same, I can envisage feet and inches then convert it to metric.
Another common thing found in the building trade is sheet materials, OSB can be bought in both metric and imperial sizes and generally plywood comes in 8'x4' sheets or 2440x1220 mm wheras plasterboard is supplied in 2.4mx1.2m. Makes a big difference when setting out stud walls Rolling Eyes

I also always work in imperial measurements not metric.

I think that one factor often overlooked is that imperial measurements generally originated because they were useful and sensibly-sized, eg a pint was a refreshing drink, an acre is the area one man can mow (with a scythe of course) in a day. A foot is, well, about the length of a foot, a yard the length of a stride.

Metric measurements are only logical from the mathematical point of view being based on multiples of ten, but have absolutely no relevance to daily life. For example the current defintion of a meter is "is the length of the path travelled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1/299 792 458 of a second". Very useful!

To be fair though, the current definition of a metre is only as it is because we now know the speed of light and it is a more accurate way of describing it.
The original "metre" was a bar of metal I think - so it is subject to expansion and contraction due to temperature. It's only therefore a true metre under specific temperature and pressure conditions.

In general though it's correct that Imperial measures are easier to use for the reason stated, that they were applied to and derived from human activity.

It all gets more confusing to me....we bu fuel in litres yet always talk about miles per gallon. Go figure! Rolling with laughter

Would be much easier if we stuck with imperial measurements for everything. I was at school in the early 1970s and had to learn about both measurement methods but then - and now - think imperial and convert "roughly" ...

Litres per km or kms per litre is the only really significant one to take over here. Not noticed the kids using it so maybe it has a while to go yet?

Back to the car park weight limits - anyone know or have a theory as to why the limit is set as it is?

Is it something to do with the weight of a commercial Morris van in 1962 or something?

I am sure I am no aristocrat, however, when sat in the drivers seat of my Defender and owing to the height of the vehicle, I do look down at the ordinary common drivers on the road, dont you know! Whistle For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..
