Getting harder to get into gear........
Hi All

Another problem surfacing with the truck, over the last month, at times it has been tricky to get into gear sometimes, today it was bad, i couldn't get it into reverse and was stuck blocking the road for a while, other times its first or second mainly.....is this a defender trait of some sort, or unusual? What is the best remedy? although i feel this might be a garage job?

In the 8 or so Defenders that have been in the family we've not had any gear selection issues, so I'd say it is unusual.

Adjust the bias springs on the top of the turret as they affect the ease it goes into gear. I had a similar issue which turned out to be the grub screw at the rear of the selector shaft coming loose (well mine had a groove). Might also be the grub screw at the front of the box.

Can this be done with the box in situ or is it a removal job? I do not have access to a pit or lifting gear

Turret and Front Grub Screw = Easy as they are at the gear leaver end.

The rear one is harder but it may be doable. I didn't check mine until the box was out and I had replaced it with a Ashcroft one as I had lost all gears while out driving so went for new box to be safe.

OK just got back from the garage for an evalulation/estimate.......

He thinks its not the bias springs as its intermittent, it was absolutely fine driving it to and from the garage, he thinks a spring has come loose on the clutch plate and is sometimes in postition, and sometimes loose, he wants to replace the clutch and a few other bits as he will have the box out for about 700 quid........

YIKES

Does that sound plausible/likely ? 2008 TDCi 2.4 XS CSW
