transmission noise / poor take up
for those as mechanically stupid as me and suffering with transmission noise.

got the car back yesterday after ecu issues and as soon as I pulled off the forecourt I'm thinking there a load more transmission noise / slack when engaging the transmission than I remembered but put it down to having a range rover sport for a couple of weeks.

Anyway I had to learn how to drive a manual gearbox again and very gently to avoid this 'new' noise when engaging the transmission?

coming home tonight the damn thing broke down (only picked it up LAST night!), and guess what transmission troubles - couldn't select a gear.

phoned the garage to see what they'd done to the transmission if anything before phoning LRA to rescue me.......the garage asked if I was in high or low ratio Exclamation

the penny dropped.........it had jumped out of high into neutral - durrrrr (they were still on the phone at this point thinking dumb f*ck wit) Embarassed Embarassed . so for whatever reason I guess someone had been playing with the high / low and not fully engaged it into high.

anyway the reasoning behind this post was just to suggest if there's anyone as dumb as me out there with transmission backlash - why not try engaging / disengaging the high / low - it might just help?

even if the lever wasnt fully back but you had drive prior to it jumping out that means it was selected. The backlash would be the same whether the lever was fully back or not. the fact it wasnt fully back just meant it jumped out. Cheers

I dont disagree with you but first and very brief results seems to suggest its all ok now?

if you follow the full procedure as per LRE for engaging hi or low from the other then it will go in and stay in. Cheers

The LRE procedure can be followed and it can still pop out. Especially if it needs adjusting. Mike

Its seems absolutely bang on now so I can only assume it wasn't properly enganged.

it only takes a fraction out to be enought to engage it and it pop out and really "push" it to be in and it being right.

Usually after a clutch or gearbox change (i only had 3!) Mike
