Changing the Fuel Cap Lock
Hello folks,

Does anybody know how to remove the lock barrel from a pre-TD5 fuel cap? I set to this afternoon to swap mine but having dismantled the cap to its' component parts, I still can't work out how to get the barrel out.

Looks like I've found the solution to this over on LR4X4 and it involves drilling into the casting to access the release pin. Bloody stupid design Rolling Eyes I'll have another go when I get chance.

Yes drilling I'm afraid, same on the rear door lock too. It's not that bad of a job really just measure twice. Ray

No, the rear door lock has a handy hole to give access to the release peg. I've just fitted a barrel to a new handle for my soon to be fitted new rear door. Darren

Mine locked up while at a motorway filling station had very little fuel and could not get the cap off. Had to phone the AA and it took the AA man ages to get it off. Bought a new one from ebay for under £10.00 For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Out of interest why? Can't you just buy a new cap complete with keys? Do earlier ones have one key fits all or something?

On earlier ones like mine, one key does all except the ignition. I'm gradually renewing the doors and fitting new locks as I go, and I want the fuel cap to match as before. Darren

Ah, perhaps the design was refined at some point. I haven't taken the original rear door lock off yet but I've got a used later lock to hand and the new one that I've just fitted, and they both have a hole to release the barrel. Darren

Mine did this once too, we encouraged it off (well, the top half) with some grunting and and a large flat bladed screwdriver in the end!
