It may be the AA but frankly the issue is you're speaking with idiots and sorry for being rude.
You just need to find a more savvy set of folk to speak with. I'm with the NFU and I just speak to real folk in my local office, not a massive call centre full of people that don't have any real in depth knowledge of what they're selling. Not saying the NFU will work for you but it does for me. There are plenty of other companies that are a bit more switched on to our vehicles. Have you looked in the insurance section for any recommendations? |

Some of the really big companies and comparison site don't like them as they don't quite fit into their little boxes. Try a few of the specialist brokers like Adrian Flux or Autonet.
By it being registered as a van you save about £250 a year in car tax.  |

I feel your pain. Over half an hour on the phone to direct line to be told that a 110 Utility was a commercial motor so would need to be dealt with by their commercial team. Then another half an hour to be told that the Direct Line's commercial team didn't have a 110 Utility on their computer so wouldn't even give me a quote. "But your domestic car people knew what I was driving??" Computer said no.
An hour of my life that I will never get back. I believe that most of the main insurers use the same database of vehicles. A-Plan had the same issue, but instead of hitting a wall, they checked and said that it would be insured as a Station Wagon (5 seats rather than 7). I didn't know about the def2 A-Plan discount when I first insured so went to their Ipswich Office (the most local to me). They really worked the back sides off to sort out my insurance quote (it was complicated by many things including the above) |

I've heard many a good account of A Plan on here so a month ago I gave them a try as my renewal date was nearing.
No claims, accidents nor convictions. Advanced driver, IAM First, RoSPA Gold, instruct for both organisations. Standard 90HT with no mods other than the factory A Bar and twin factory spots. Lots of expensive security measures. Guess how much they wanted? Actually, they didn't want anything. "Sorry Sir, we are unable to quote".  Last edited by rockster57 on 28th Jun 2017 9:26pm. rockster57, did you ask them why?
I am wondering whether Defenders are becoming too much of a liability to some insurance companies (depending on the location). Postcode lottery perhaps? Just my hunch. Not sure whether this code or would ever be admitted. I would insure you rockster57. Could IAM and RoSPA thing work against you - as soon as you say 'instruct', I wonder if you are being classed as a driving instructor'? Stranger things have happened. |

It's difficult getting the know the "whys" from insurance company computers. I hope it's not the driving instructor aspect as I had disclosed my actual occupation. The instructing (actually observing/mentoring in IAM/RoSPA parlance) is non-occupational voluntary work. Personally I suspect their disinterest might be down to my BD postcode?

This reminds me of an episode back in the mid 80's when I owned a Sierra XR4x4. Churchill were my insurers. When I tried to renew with them they apologised and told me they no longer insured that particular vehicle as they were the cause of a disproportionate amount of claims. A couple of weeks later (after I'd found cover elsewhere, I received a letter from Churchill telling me they were disappointed I hadn't renewed with them and how they hoped they could be of service in the future!

My French insurance guy couldn't quite understand what mine was and jumped on the word Jaguar
it took a fair while to convince him I wasn't trying to insure a sports car.  |

Same sillyness over here. The MY 2015 is registered as a truck (in order to get Euro 5 emission classification).
Insurances use this to charge a truck rate, which is much higher than for passenger cars. Tax, however, is charged for a passenger car, which is much higher than for a truck. 
Mine is now registered as a camper van, being cheaper in both insurance and tax  |
