Wales 2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 DCPU Stornoway Grey
2" Receiver Capacity
I'm looking to fit a 2" receiver instead of my current dixon bate adjustable setup due to 1. ease of changing fittings, 2. improved clearance and 3. improved appearance.

I have seen offerings from safari equip, terrafirma, equipe4x4, shadow etc. All have tie rods back the the chassis rails but I can't see anything about tow capacity from any of them.
I suppose the limiting factor would be chassis rail fixing shear or receiver pin shear. Or bending of a drop plate. I have an Ifor Williams rated for 2750kg

Does anyone have any idea on their capacity?

The problem with 2 inch receivers is that they aren't type approved so haven't been formally tested. A quirk of law means that they're legal to fit to your DCPU but not to Station Wagons (dependant on age). Darren

Yes I have done the necessary checks and I'm vehicle class N1 so all above board for 2" receiver.

I have towed my 3.5 ton Ifor Williams for many miles without any problems on my 2" receiver, and it performed perfectly.

In the US 2" receivers with the same dimensions and the same pin size are used for trailers well over 3.5t and there don't seem to be problems, so I think that you should be OK.

They may not be type approved, but they still have to be fit-for-purpose!

I wasn't really suggesting that they weren't fit for purpose. Merely that the various offerings in the UK won't have been formally tested so proper capacities won't be available. They're obviously fairly standard in the States but without more detail, who knows what the provenance are of the ones on sale here? Darren

Regarding the receiver pin strength.

The L322 factory towbar is 2" receiver. Most you see have the detachable swan neck which has an adaptor in the receiver with a single bolt to hold it in. But they also do a "Farmers hitch" A drop plate basically. Which slots into the 2" receiver and is retained by a pin. Both L322 towing kits are rated to 3.5tons. So i would think the pin will be more than strong enough.

Further to this, I think I have whittled it down to the Terrafirma or Safari Equipment

Does anyone know whether the Safari Equipment one bolts up unto the crossmember from below with the three m10 bolts?
I can see holes in the Terrafirma picture to suggest that one does

Safari Equipment one is 20% cheaper and the price includes the dropper plate!

Any others available that I should consider?

I have the Safari Equip one and rate it very highly. It is superbly made, and very "body-hugging". It bolts to the rear cross-member upwards (3 setscrews) and from the rear face (6 setscrews) , and has braces to both chassis legs.

Also, not apparent from the photographs, the part that bolts to the lower surface of the cross-member has provision for securing a breakaway cable, something which I feel is important, since it means that the breakaway cable is not attached to the removable part of the coupling.

I also have a front steering guard with 2" receiver from Safari Equip which I rate very highly, and it means of course that any of my attachments can be fitted front or rear.
