Hi Simon,

Owning a Defender (of any age) tdci, td5 or tdi is an 'experience' in itself and you will encounter minor niggles upwards. That's part of life.

Tdci's seem to have had there fair share of issues, but no more than all the other varients that have gone before. I own a td5 (by choice wanted 9 seats otherwise I'd have bought the Tdci - Puma) But clutch issues seem to be an re-occuring problem. There are some very helpful PUMA owners on here and sure they'll point you in the right direction.

Best advice I can give is buy from a reputable dealer (either main dealer or specialist independent) and you'll have some backup if things do go wrong. If you can, ensure that the truck has had all of it's recalls sorted . Would avoid private or 'general' car sales unless you can go with somebody who is very knowledgeable about Landy's.

Don't let this put you off.... They're unique vehicles, bags of fun, great owners community and if you do take the plunge, then this is deffo the forum for you. Thumbs Up

Good luck Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.

Only if your dealer is willing to give you a courtesy car verytime you have to take it back in between services. High chance it will as the TDci still after 4 years of production has many niggles. Puma 110" SW

Buying a 2-3 year old Puma is less stressful than buying a new one as all the niggles will have been fixed and they dont start to loosen up till 15,000m. Buying a new one is like standing on the foothills of Everest and wondering if its worth the hassle! My 2007 90 is as near perfect as can be owned and no new Puma owner can say that. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

I know an 09 one that is used for towing boats everyday, does 80,000 miles a year has done 90,000 so far and only niggle has been wash wipe intermittant thing needed fixing. He lives in it/sleeps in it etc and loves it Thumbs Up

You only hear about the ones that go wrong, go onto a Jap 4X4 site and you will be horrified - they DO go wrong but my oh my, do they pay for it when they do - parts prices are crazy and they are not cheap to buy in the first place. Look at Toyota Land Cruiser starting at 40K Surprised

By it because you will love it, you will never LOVE something Jap Rolling Eyes

if you search posts in my name you will find a thread last summer asking all these questions - i got a lot of very good advice.

I bought a 5 month old one [owner went abroad] and now covered 8K+ in it without issues. just a replacement heated rear window under warranty.

it is so different from other cars or modern 4x4s. i made the choice and love it. not had any second thoughts.

get a couple of decent long test drives, i borrowed one for a day.

good luck BM52

A couple of 'bang on' choice sentences from Zagato! I have a 08 XS ex-demonstrator that I have had two and a half years! Had 4K miles on it originally and was 5 months old - not unlike yours! Knocking on the door of 30k miles and has been faultless...still on original clutch, gearbox, transfer box and remainder of running gear! Apart from a few cosmetic swap outs under warranty due to poor paint finish (headlamp rings, side steps, front bumper) I have been extremely lucky with my purchase in comparison to some of the 'nightmare scenarios' within this site! Red Dot too has a point about all problems having been ironed out with a second hand good example! Knowing my vehicle as I do and considering it's historical dependability I will be sad to see it go...If and when the time ever comes!
Enjoy it and welcome to the world of the TDCI, may your troubles be non existent, your warts easy to get rid of, your enjoyment immense and your love for an inanimate object grow and grow! Welcome! Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!
